^ ignores any charcters after the eighth. I'd probaby use something other than "password," but it's exactly 8 characters and my friends seem to think it's pretty clever.

Are you kidding? That has funny shaped letters in it. I don't know how to use those.

depends.

for stupid stuff like web forums or email, it's only 4 characters.

for work and logging into my computer at home, it bounces between 6-9 characters. there's one long phrase that I use; I cycle between different parts of the phrase for my password, changing them every 3 months. once I've used the entire phrase, I find a new one.

My roboform password is 24 characters and my online backup is 20. Those are basically the only ones I know, the only ones I need to know.

Wow... I have five 25-char randomly generated uppercase/lowercase/symbols rotating for new passwords right now, and countless older passwords that are still >15 chars.

Is this overkill?

Mine is 16 Characters with uppercase, lower case, symbols, numbers.

I have heard that the asterisk is what really throws off password crackers.

This would be interesting to trycrack a password by brute force with an asterisk comparing it with the other symbols, seeing which one throws it off the most.

Depends on the value of the information protected.

Forum passwords - 6-8 characters
Bank Accts - 10 characters or more, mixed case, numbers/symbols

I hate the fact that there's no standard rules for passwords... have too many different ones because of differing rules.

One thats 5, one thats 7, and thats alphanumeric and 8. Then I have a alphanumeric uppercase/lowercase symbol password thats 11 characters long, and then another thats 12. I friggin hate having so many. I wish that there was a standard.
