Quick question folks..
Just wondering if anyone here is running a dual p3 600e.. (not overclocked)
If they are, or anyone running any dual p3 coppermine, are they fine to run on passive heatsinks?
or should I go for the HS/F method..?

Just wanna know before I box the server up for good..

passive or retail?
 
I'venever seen a p3 that had passive cooling.

It doens't need spectacular cooling, but unless the heatsinks are in a wind tunnel, 'passive' won't do it.
 
many dell's use them and still today use passive for their new machines. They just opt for the fan on the case with a bezel to suck the heat off the heatsink.

As long as you have good airflow you should be able to run them passive. A lot of servers run them 🙂
 
I thought so!! they were made to run cooler then those Katami or whatever they were called.. 😉

Just one other question, if you got no serious cooling going on.. just the psu taking out the hot air.. do u reckon its still good enough?

I have a P3 866EB which I tried to run passively. I didn't want to buy another HSF so I used an aluminium one made by Coolermaster that was rated upto Athlon XP 2700+.

It worked, but then summer came and the room temperature climbed to about 23*C during the day. It would lock up on occasion. So I've added a 60mm fan on top, but volt-modded it to 7V using the wire-swap trick (I may have possibly just made this name up). It works fine thereafter and is still silent since the fan spins at about 1500rpm.

I think my 866EB could run passive with a slightly better HSF, bearing in mind that I also had to lap it myself and I used sandpaper to do so! I think your slot 1 CPUs should be able to handle being passive easier than mine due to the increased surface area for heat dissipation.

It won't kill the chip - P3 will just freeze up if it gets too hot.

(Didn't think about the bezels - but that actually qualifies as a 'wind tunnel' and isn't really passive).
 
the many quad xeons here off dell are fanless but there are 6 (SIX) 120mm fan sucking air away from it..
need pics ? these are xeon 3.0ghz with 4mb cache
