A friend of mine has tried a variety of antennas. This one does the job quite well.
 
That thing looks like a gimmick, and the reviews on Meritline look fabricated. Does it even work? It is also sold regularly on Ebay for $15 shipped.
 
Sure looks like a fancy-pants UHF antenna to me. It likely has a thin wire loop sandwiched in the plastic panel, and running around the edge of it.
I think what you are seeing here is a loop antenna with a coax connector, to replace the balun you would need with the bare circular loop antenna of the 1970's. (see the link)
