Passive cooling for dual slot 1 P3

Well, I love my "new" duallie, but I could do without the noisy retail fans. My temperatures are relatively low compared to my newer Athlon systems: usually 26-33C per CPU, but they're not loaded most of the time. These seem artificially low, since it also says my case temperature is 18C and the room temperature is around 70-75F. :) Short of just unplugging the cpu fans and seeing if they crash, are there any heatsinks designed specifically for this? Will they actually fit on my dual board?

Working with IBM Aptivas and Compaq Evo computers, I've seen HUGE passive heatsinks on P3s. I can't tell you where to buy them though, especially since they're slot 1.

Exactly. :) I have a p2-450 in another pc with a large passive heatsink. I wish I knew where to find them.

i used an athlon heatsink on my tually, so they seem compatible. heatsinks today are far better then the ones used to cool p3's originall, i'm pretty sure u could get awy with passive if u bought an slk 800 or 900. on sale at svc.com.

Yes, you could get away with a passive cooler like those. But I don't think they fit slot 1 CPUs.

I had a pep66 on a 1.0a tualatin which would run passive, but the slot1 p3's would be harder to cool. Have you considered watercooling with say an exos?

LOL, no not at all. :) Seriously, this is just my backup server, and occasionally gets game server duty when I have a LAN @ my place. The only reason I would see not using a socket cooling solution on a slot cpu would be to cool the 2 cache chips that flank these. IIRC, Slot A and Slot 1 heatsinks have mounting holes in different positions.

What do you guys think of a couple of these heatsinks? Are slot 1 celeron heatsinks incompatible with slot 1 P2/P3 CPUs? It's been too long for me to remember. :)

I have some passive cooled P2 333 MHz chips laying next to my feet in static bags in a box.

If you want....you can have the chips and heatsinks for $20 shipped

PM me if you want them.....or email me from my profile and I can shoot some pics of them over to you to see.

I have passive cooling on my dual P3 450 (upgraded from the P2 333) and it runs fine....but the heatsinks are rather wide. Make sure you mobo has the room for it. My RioWorks mobo in my dual P3 650 rig won't accept passive cooling due to the narrow distance between the Slots.

My Tyan Tiger 100 has plenty of room for passive cooling.

Criminy, those are some expensive heatsinks! I'm glad we're not in the slot 1 days anymore. As cool as these chips appear to be running, I don't really see the need for an extreme solution like that. Any opinions on those celeron heatsinks? It appears that they would work, if the slot 1 P3 with cache chips (which are what my 550's are) are the same as the first issue P2.

My heatsinks are the same as the early release P3 heatsinks.

The Slot1 Celerons may not be due to the cache being on or off-die....can't remember

Duh, if I bothered to read the site I would have seen that the Celeron heatsinks aren't compatible. Sigh...
