Passive (0r VERY quiet) HSF for 1.1Ghz Celeron in a server

I don't know squat about Celeron/PIII cooling. I an throwing together a server out of (mostly) spare parts. Gonna have a 1.1 Tully/Celeron on an Intel or Asus board. NO overclocking.

What passive or very quiet HSFs will work good for this? Money isn't very important, quiet is. Thanks!

money no object....
swiftech mcx370 paired with vantec stealth
or a panaflow fan

its a big heatsink so it would work passivly but you need some fan on it to take away some heat

If you are not overclocking, the Intel heatsink/fan combo is hard to beat and it is free with a retail processor.

How about the Zalman Flower copper HS? Has anyone played with these? Can you run it fanless, or maybe with one of those real quiet NMB 80mm from SVC?

The Zalman flowers are really quiet. But I don't think you can run them passively. The 92mm fan has a speed controller that cranks down to completely silent. But if money is no problem then go watercooling. Innovatek is the best I've seen.

celeron 1.1
I think it's hard to beat the retail heatsink interms of noise. It wont be the coolest setup, but the tullys dont put out much heat anyways.

Thanks everybody. I'm going to try the retail HSF (and probably 7volt it) to see how it does.

If I need better I'll get a Zalman. Aren't they real heavy though? Hate to break the lugs off the socket.

If the stock hsf doesn't do what you want, something to consider would be a gc68 w/ 80mm L1a panaflo fan- it might even do the job at 7v. It's really a lot better cooler than the price would indicate, if it will clear the capacitors on your board.

Price is always a consideration, no point in spending more for the same results....

My dell poweredge 500sc originally came with a celeron 1.1 with just a hs no fan. Cooling was done with a shroud over the cpu fan and out the back of the case. It ran very cool. Maybe you can setup a shroud type thing as well. I've done that before.

yup my 1.2 celeron (poweredge 500sc) with the passive heatsink, shroud and 92mm fan runs at a cool 25C

I was very impressed at the type of 92mm fan featured in the back of the PowerEdge servers. It was a Delta 92x92x38mm, and had 3 blades. People said it was loud, but one guy replaced it with an ordinary thermally-controlled fan and it worked just fine without overheating. Now, if that Delta had thermal control, it might have been cool, because with only 3 blades at 1400rpm or so, that thing would have been dead silent. But those things usually go in server rooms.

One thing you can do if you crave quiet is put your stuff in a Directron Dragon 601 case which is made by Chieftec. It looks just like the famed Antec SX1040 and is available in black or gray. Just get that and an Antec TruePower power supply and a Vantec Stealth to go in the front hard drive bay, and your case will be very quiet, and still move enough air to get the heat out. Or you could use one of those quiet NMBs in front. Then use a Zalman Flower cooler with the 92mm fan, or the stock HSF. You will have a big silent case and a clear conscience (not locking your components up in an oven).

I use a GC68 with Panaflo L1A at 8v on a Tully 1.4-S. It's very quiet and reasonably cool at about 39 degrees C. at idle and not much more at full load. I've tried several Tualatins and have found them to run not that cool, e.g., much warmer than a Cumine PIII 1 GHz. Of course, they've been running 30-40% faster.

Well I started off by 7 volting the retail fan. It's WAAY quieter than at full speed. If this keeps things cool enough I'll stick with it. CPU temps are 33-34C at idle and mid 40C range at load. I'll keep my eyes on the temps. There's no problem with running this up into the mid 50's, is there? I This is my first Celeron.
