Cell phones generate EMI which could potentially interrupt the normal functioning of the aircraft's electronics. Having people not use them on flights is more than a courtesy issue.

Actually that has never been proven. The main reason for the requirement is from the air your phone can reach many more towers than it can from 'ground level' and is moving much faster than the cell systems are designed to handle.

Bill

So why would the FAA care if your cellphone's carrier can't keep up with your signal?

Actually Bill is only partially correct. The reason it's banned b/c cell phones at high altitudes will try to connect with many base stations at once, which risked overloading the network for the people on the ground. (3G phones were designed to help stop this problem though)

The FCC is actually the one which banned cell phones from airplanes back in 1991, before cell phones were ever really prevelant in society. The FAA just "supports" their decision.

Two articles over the subject. I've found other articles about the overloading of base stations but none of them are "big name" sites so to speak. It's not necessarily the FAA that cares - it's because of paranoid idiots and the media who falsely claim that cell phones interfere with plane equipment. It's the miseducation of the public. That and airlines get a fat cut from pay-per-use phones in airplanes.

A flight attendant told her that she would need to change her seat if she couldn't follow instructions because she was sitting in an emergency exit row, which was open only to people who follow directions

BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA

That idiot should never be allowed to fly again!

I hear what my cell does to my PC's and my car's speakers when it's in use. I can imagine what it might do to a plane's electronics.

Hospitals also ban the use of cell phones in certain areas.

last time i check its an FAA regulation
he said it is more than a courtesy issue...

Can anyone show me proof that a cellphone could crash a plane?

A cell phone CAN affect an airplanes instruments...I've done it myself in a small airplane...for me it caused static on the radio.

A friend of mine was tracking a VOR radial outbound on an airway in a 757 (capt). The needle swayed on and off for about 30 mins, and the airplane was swaying to stay on it. He finally asked an FA to check for cells and found a guy talking on one...or trying to. He shut it off and it stopped.

You phone isn't going to do anything to the plane's capacity to fly. Using a cell phone at a gas pump isn't going to start a fire, either. Both are common misconceptions.

Hell, the point here isn't even whether or not cell phone usage on a plane SHOULD be allowed.

The fact is that it's not. I'll be honest with you guys. Flying can be scary anyway and I don't need some idiot who can't even stay the hell off of the phone for 1-3 hours on the plane with me. Anyone who is going to cause a scene over a cell phone call can gtf off the plane for all I care.

She must be that same person that loudly comments about a movie the entire time while in the theatre.

If my cell phone causes interference with my computer monitor at work like it does, I'll just leave mine off when I'm on an aircraft just to be safe. I can't imagine having 50 different signals and channels being broadcast and what problems that might cause on today's modern airliners with all the electronics, etc. on them. I'd just rather not test the 1% rule when it comes to hurtling over the earth at over 300mph at 30,000 feet.

http://www.snopes.com/horrors/techno/hospital.htm
Although no real deaths have yet occurred, enough scary incidents have taken place that at least some hospitals have banned the use of cell phones on their premises, or at least in their trauma, critical care, and surgical areas. Cell phone interference has created false alarms in infant incubators and prompted heart monitors to spew results making it appear as if patients hooked up to them were in cardiac arrest. It has set off fire alarms and caused IV pumps to stop working. Worse, it has caused failures in some equipment necessary for the maintenance of life itself. For instance, at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, a breathing machine for infants sputtered to a halt when a worker switched on a cellular telephone while medical equipment was being tested. That there was no baby attached to that gizmo at that time doesn't mean that a similar failure couldn't have happened when an infant's every breath was on the line.

In another incident reported on the FDA web site:

A patient in the intensive care unit was receiving epinephrine by an infusion pump when a visitor received a cell phone call. When the phone was answered, the infusion pump increased the rate of the drip. The patient received an unintended bolus of medication and subsequently developed epinephrine toxicity.

it may not do anything to the plane's capacity to fly, but it sure can affect the flight instruments, which interfere with the pilot's ability to maintain his cool and not throw you out the door at 35,000 feet.
