When is the earliest you can get your license in England?

(Congrats btw :))

Earliest is 17, but ive never needed a car as i was at uni for 4 years, so I was too busy being p|ssed to drive, lol. Its 17 in the USA isnt it?

15 to get your learners permit (a licensed driver 21 years or older must be in the car with you)
16 to get a drivers license

really?!?!? i thought it was 25 years or older.

You could be right, anyone else know?

Bloody hell 16 is young to get a license! Youre only just legal to smoke at that age!

Uh, I don't know...

In the USA:
16 to drive, 18 to smoke, and 21 to drink.

If I remember correctly (and I probably don't), in some European countries, it is sort of reversed (i.e. you can drink before you can drive, or something like that).

Well, I got my license when I was 16.5, which is now almost .5 years ago. I guess I could have been legally driving with other people in the car at least a month ago, but I never do that anyway...

i was about to haw haw you for getting yer license so late before seeing that you are a brit, but i suppose i coudl still haw haw!! you anyway. :p

well congrats on passing the driving test. unlike in europe, in the states, you sort of need to be able to drive asap, since mass traisit, along w/ car pooling is unheard of outside of a major metro city..

cheers mate and happy motoring

in most european countries the test consists of 2 things

-a theory test on the computer
-a practical test (driving around with the instructor and doing some maneuvers)

Only just saw this....well done mate!

I didn't realise you're 23....ah you should be fine then....if you were 17 I would be giving you 4 weeks before you drove into a tree ;)

Im going to practise this weekend in my Dads car, the tank-like Mondeo saloon, then on Monday i'll start driving to work...ooo-err...

Well done, I passed when I was 18 and I didn't even like driving. I'm more comfortable with it now, been the whole length of the country, on the worst roads in the UK. Oh btw, don't you ever come near me whilst driving about in London! ;) I have to drive like Mika to just avoid some of the asshats here!

Yeah I like driving generally....around Sussex anyway, it's pretty nice....but in London....no no no....horrible, About a 15% chance that I will be driving to Enfield this evening, but much more likely I will train up....M25 is just too much hassle (junction 4 onwards then through dartford tunnel to junc 30....nightmare section)

I've decided i'm doing a Pass Plus course too, which means you get taken on motorways and through the centre of London for a total of 6 hours hard-driving experience. After which a pass gains you 10% off your Insurance, equivalent to 1 year no-claims-bonus, YAY!
