I have a Passat, and have driven Maximas. On the highway, the Passat is far more comfortable and handles wonderfully. It handles like a German car, and the Maxima like a Japanese one.

Passat: Smooth, comfortable and beautiful German sedan

Maxima: Another generic Japanese sedan

If you want Looks - Passat
-According to Consumer reports, VWs been messing up in the electronics area.

If you want Reliability - Maxima

Also look into Mazda 6 (NEW AND LOOKS SWEET), The new Honda Accord (looks funky, but new), Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry/Avalon.

The Passat goes for me. Ive driver both, the Nissan is more spirited but the quality is suck in the interior....lower quality leather and carpeting. The Passat's leather felt thicker and the padding on the seats are firmer, so they may hold up longer. Also we've had a Maxima a few years ago and it was a lemon....the electronics wouldn't work half the time on it. Clock wouldn't work one day.....stereo turned itself off and on...dash board lights went out. Man that was the worst car evar!...but then again it was just one car.
