No rumors. It's true, it's damn true. Sieg Hall is an ugly piece of sh!t

ahaha that seattle p-i article is hilarious....

Ed Lazowska, chairman of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, received an e-mail from a colleague at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology:

"I'm sorry to hear that Sieg is still standing. Better luck next quake."

Oren Etzioni is a sharp AI guy if he's still teaching at UW. AI's an interesting area to go into, though I haven't read about any real breakthroughs in technique in years: still just rule-based systems, searches with heuristics, and variations on neural nets. Better results seem to come from increases in machine power and storage more than anything else.

But you could be one of the people who does come up with something new :)

yep that's my plan... well i think i'd like to focus more on applications of AI :) looks like etzioni is still teaching here.... i'm taking a discrete structures class this qtr from dieter fox, who's doing the sony aibo soccer research here.

so where has your degree taken you in these 9 years?

( pause for Dungeon Siege, dinner, Jet Li's "The One", more Dungeon Siege :) )

Sieg was much better back then, just old not decaying :)

After UW I took a position at MicroCase for 6 years, acting as lead developer for a compact DOS-based app then for their first Win32 release. MicroCase makes statistical analysis software for the Social Sciences and is used for both research and bundled with textbooks for classes in Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology. We'd shipped over a million copies of MicroCase-based textbooks by late '99.

In late '99 MicroCase was sold to Thomson Learning, but I didn't feel like moving to Northern California so had (woohoo!) some extended vacation time. I had a nice copper parachute so it was pretty fun.

Then in early 2000 a VP from MicroCase founded Respondus and talked me into being the lead developer for it, which is where I am now. Respondus makes software for creating content for e-learning systems such as WebCT, Blackboard, and eCollege. It's a combination document processor and internet client (for automating transfers to/from the different systems). We're now in use at colleges / universities in over 40 countries and the company's doing well so far.

I will be sure to stop in and say hi to a few RA's then, hehehe. Oh, when you do your walk throughs this year, I'm assuming you will have to, be sure to announce yourself nice and loud. I hate being caught semi-nude with strangers walking through. :( Is HFS all hardcore this year about RA's and their jobs? Last year our RA, Jeff, got fired 4 weeks before school ended, and a few others were punished I heard, not cool stuff. How is the dining by the way? I've heard its changed quite a bit. The first time you do the walkthrough our cluster you will probably be able to tell who visits anantech, with all the TV's, extra computer hardware, dig cams, pda's and other goodies strewn around haphazardly. Matter a fact last year I got written up for having too many boxes (from all the various hotdeals) piled in the cluster coat hanger area, poised a fire hazard. See, hot deals forums is dangerous for your health. :p

lol Lots o questions...

We're doing walk throughs through clusters this year, but we don't generally announce ourselves unless you notice us or we're asking you to stop something or writing you up, :).

What exactly happened with Jeff? There are certain things that are punishable by firing, regardless of the individual's record as an RA.

Dining is AMAZING... 8 has its grand opening next Saturday, it's so good. I've had the Mongolian Grill stuff, can't wait to try everything else out.

Who all do you know who's on AT that lives in McMahon?

About getting written up, it really depends on the RA who wrote you up, and if you'd been asked before to clean it up. You're supposed to break up any cardboard boxes and put them in the little kitchenette area, not just leave them in your cluster - in that context, they do constitute a fire hazard. :p

I'm just a barrel of questions. It would be cool if that barrel had monkeys too, 'cause a barrel of monkeys sounds cool. :)

Yeah, the boxes actually have to be broken down and taken downstairs to the dumpster, I didn't know that.

So what exactly is at this all hall meeting? Can you give me the cliff notes and spare me the trip? :)

Haha, it's over and done now. If you really want the cliff notes version, read the handbook.

So what'd you end up doing tonight?
