Oh, yeah. *Ferris Bueller theme playing...*

Yeah, I moved in last weekend, didn't get to actually sleep in here 'cuz they were finishing construction. Place looks pretty cool, 'cept I haven't put any posters up on my floor yet. ;)

Darien: your RA should be Tessa, she's short with dark hair... fun to hang with. :D

Comp Sci, back then it was still in Seig Hall and the MIPS and Sun workstations were mostly black and white. The dark ages :) . Luckily I had my blazing AMD 386 40 MHz for gaming.

They were planning the new building 9 years ago and haven't moved yet? Yikes.

METIP - yes, I was an RA for two quarters including working on the summer activities for local highscoolers. Dr. Tanimoto did some nice work there. Are you working with him now?

METIP?
Mathematicl Experiences Through Image Processing - software for math education such as a "Pixel Calculator" that shows the effect of adding +10 (or -5 or *2, etc) to the brightness level of a greyscale image. Back then we were writing for Win3.1 on 386 PCs and linking apps with DDE (the great- great- grandfather of COM).

nope... they're doing construction right now, for the paul allen building... looks pretty sweet. it's where the mech engr building used to be.

nah, i'm not even in the dept (yet, expect to get in this spring)... i just googled you :p steve's daughter was in my math class in middle school, and he gave us a talk one time about digital images :) i'm more interested in AI research though...

"It's a small world after all...." (sing x 1,000 until mind snaps)

Oren Etzioni is a sharp AI guy if he's still teaching at UW. AI's an interesting area to go into, though I haven't read about any real breakthroughs in technique in years: still just rule-based systems, searches with heuristics, and variations on neural nets. Better results seem to come from increases in machine power and storage more than anything else.

But you could be one of the people who does come up with something new :)

yep that's my plan... well i think i'd like to focus more on applications of AI :) looks like etzioni is still teaching here.... i'm taking a discrete structures class this qtr from dieter fox, who's doing the sony aibo soccer research here.

so where has your degree taken you in these 9 years?

btw, i dunno if it was like this when you left, but sieg has started to literally fall apart. they had to wrap the columns with some metal or something... heard rumors they were giving chunks of it to prospective grad students.
