looking at replacing my aging Q6600 machine with an i7 and looking for some suggestions before i purchase any parts.

I currently have my Q6600 running 3.6 on water and hoping to get the I7 running this speed at least. I have a fair bit of overclocking experiance but nothing on the i7

I also want to move away from water as im getting tired of having to struggle around the pipework evertime i upgarde componants. but at the same time i dont really want to add too much more noise, so onto the parts

i7 920 + a quiet heatsink
P6T motherboard, really not sure about this, suggestions please
6GB DDR3 any recommendations?

I see with DDR3 latencys have really increased, how much more speed is needed to overcome the performance loss due to timings?

also
80gig SSD
1Tb HDD

Im probably gonna see about £200 from selling off my old watercooling and Q6600 parts and i have about another £400 to add to this.

plan on keeping my PSU GPU and case

so any suggestions?

thanks

A Q6600 at 3.6GHz is fast. I don't see any i7 or i5 as a significant upgrade here, unless you're doing something that needs more CPU oomph.

I recommend waiting for Bulldozer or Sandy Bridge.

Does this mean that you have an SSD and HDD, or that you want to buy them?

Also, regarding the memory timings, you have to realize that the numbers quoted are in cycles. Thus they are a function of the memory's frequency. DDR2 800 CAS4 is exactly the same as DDR3 1600 CAS8 in terms of actual latency.

Finally, I agree with blackmage, you're not going to see much of an improvement with an i7 over what you currently have. Just get the SSD and be happy for now.
