Parts are inbound...

After combing through the material on this and other message boards, I dove in and bought parts for my first AMD setup. I've built 6 pentiums in the last 10yrs or so and build a new computer every 2-3yrs to keep up with things. This time, like every time, I had to pick up the threads of technology where I left them in the last build. I've got the following coming in:

3500+ 939 (.90)
Asus A8N-SLI De
Corsair TWINX1024-3200 XMS3200 (1Gb)
2xAsus Extreme N6800 GF PCIe
WD Caviar SATA 250Gb
2xWD Caviar SATA 120Gb for striping
Sony Dual Layer DVD+R/RW
LiteON CD RW 52x32x52x
PC Power and Cooling Turbo Cool SLI 510

3 questions:

1. I haven't spotted any radical problems in this setup, anyone else?

2. Asus specs on this video card indicate it would be a 6800GT (256MB RAM, 350MHz clock, etc.)

3. PC P&C just told me their TC510 SLI is backordered. I'm tempted to switch to the Antec True Control 550, but I've always been a P&C fan.

I know that there's more than one opinion on the choice of hardware, but I've always been happy with ASUS, like the options of SLI and want to put together a decent machine for video and games under 3k.

Thanks in advance

The fact that it is a 6800 shows that this is exactly like the 6800gt except for the fact that a 6800gt has 16 pipelines, this one has 12 and there is no guarentee that you will be able to unlock the 4 pipes.

You may have issues with your burner software if it's made to work only with the burner it's sold with. Since it appears money's not much of an object 🙂 consider getting retail Nero if you run into a problem there.

Also... you better have pizza in the plan for a premium system like that 😀

I don't think I can fit the pizza in the box, but it's a good point on the burner software

I've never had much luck with burners playing nice with the rest of the equipment in the box. I gave up on them years ago and decided to try again because they're so cheap now.

If money was not an option you should have waited for dual core processors. That is why I haven't bought an FX since last september. I got a 3500 instead and it works great. I love it and it runs like a ra**d monkey.

Yeah, but there's always a good reason to wait for the next big thing. I just get tired of waiting. Certain price/performance points make it worth putting together a new box and it seems to hit about every 2-3 years for me. If dual processors are that big a jump in performance, I'll get a new MB and extra chip when they do roll around. I am curious whether anyone else running SLI with two 6800s experienced any problems. In the reviews it seems to be related to a lack of power, so I'm hoping I have that covered.
