Partitions w/o reformatting?

hello there anandtechers, i was just wondering if there was an application(s) for partitioning your hd with out reformating it, and if you could tell me what it is and kinda how to use it that'd be great, thanx
 
I've tried Partition Magic Pro 5.0 (now they have PM 6.0) repartitioned hadr drive twice (on different PCs). The first time it works good, no data loss and the partition is easy without format hard drive. The second time is a nightmare. I used it on my friend's PC and my friend lost most of his data.
If you are going to use PM, I would advise you backup your critical data before you use it.
