Partitioning?!

My windows XP is corrupt; PC-Cillin antivirus program deleted a bunch of crucial files. I want to partition my harddrive, install windows xp onto the new partition, move all my crucial files from the old partition to the new partition, and format the old partition. How would I go about doing this?? Thanks.

My experience with WinXP (using NTFS) indicates that partitioning results in worse performance (although it may have some organizational benefit)!

However, if you insist, first backup your files and make sure they are intact before formatting, re-installing WinXP and then partitioning using XP's disk management. Or you can get Partition Magic which makes the job very easy and a lot safer!

If you have an extra drive, I suggest adding it as a slave, booting to DOS (get a Win9X floppy, if you don't have one) and copying everything "crucial" to the slave drive. Partition Magic is, as senior guy says, your best option, but even it can crap out and end your data. By creating a copy of the important stuff, you'll feel better re-partitioning your main drive.

Good luck!

Before I do anything in regards to installing new partitions and operating systems.... is there anyway I can fix Windows XP that is running on my system now? I ran chkdsk several times, and eventhough it detects problems and claims to resolve them, every time i run chkdsk the same problems are detected. I even tried setting windows xp to last best configuration, but no go. What can I do?

Unless you can restore to a stable-for-sure time-frame, a clean install is without a doubt the very best solution.

For minimum effort, use a restore point, if you can. Obviously, this means that you should use one that works and leaves you with a stable system. If this is not an option because you have no GUI access or your restore points are crap, you will have to reload the thing to solve the problem. If the latter is true, I suggest using a second drive as I outlined a few posts ago.

some have suggested that you boot with your WinXP bootable CD, choose to install XP and where you want it. it will detect the current installation and ask you if you would like to "repair" that installation. choose yes. i believe you will need to then reinstall sp1 and any other updates, but i am not sure on that.
