Partitioning Server 2003

yes, i left the standard dell partition intact. no, i didnt realize it would be a problem later on in life. the windows updates are what is taking up the space, but i doubt i can arbitrarily delete those folders. is there a way, either in windows or with 3rd party softs, to resize the system partition? I did 5 different searches looking for info on this but havent seen an answer for my question. anyone know?

Can you post a picture of the disk management? Do you have extra space that is adjacent to the current system partition? If so you can just switch it to a dynamic disk and then resize in Windows. You could also use a 3rd party tool to resize or recreate a larger partition.

the system partition is at 12gb (i know, sorry) and the adjacent drive that is used for storage is 452.48gb, 322 available. Id rather not change them to dynamic, as im not sure how to do it, and i dont want to have to work around the clock to get the system back up and running if i fail. I found one that looks promising, BootIt? NG. its tho only one ive seen that says it works on servers, and can resize without damage.

First, thing to do is make a complete backup. How many physical disks are in the system? If the partition next to the system partition is used, I don't think you're going to find a utility to allow you to resize the primary partition. What you'd have to do is backup both partitions, then delete the second partition, resize the primary and then create a new second partition where you can restore your backup.

What's the OS? Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, or SBS 2003?

Even with SBS 2003, which is a LOT busier than most Server 2003 Standard Editions, you can typcially make them function with a 12 GB System partition. I've managed a lot of SBS 2003 servers with that partition size. You relocate things like the Shared User folders, Exchange stores and logs, keep a handle on the Windows Updates Uninstall files, set the System Restore files to a reasonable value, etc.

If you still want to resize, you can use third-party partitioning software. Paragon's server partition manager software will work. It's about $300. An acquaintance used it to expand an SBS 2003 System Partition.

You need to back up EVERYTHING. ASSUME THIS IS GOING TO FAIL. Make a full system backup of the boot partition (including System State) and backups of all your data.

Other software that can handle this include system imaging software: ShadowProtect Server and Acronis Server. You can back up the system drive image, re-partiition the hard drive from Windows setup, and then restore the System partition to the new larger partition. Then copy your data back from your backups of the Data drive.

Heck, even Windows Home Server could do this for you, although it's not supported by Microsoft with Server 2003.

The Disk Management built in Windows Server 2008 has the ability of resizing partition, while 2003 can not. You can repartition your hard drive with the third party software, such as [spam] Partition Manager Server Edition, nearly $150.
