Partitioning large SSD drive

Is partitioning a large SSD drive a bad idea? I'm asking this because currently I have a 2TB secondary drive for installing games and apps etc, and it is partitioned into 3 drives. When 2TB SSD become cheap enough, I hope I can replace it by just cloning the drive directly. Or is there any reliable program for merging partitions? I tried one before and it broke a lot of my apps.

cloning can be risky and cloning from HD to SDD can be even more problematic. I always just bite the bullet in these situations and do things manually from scratch. Also: why the need for so many partitions? There really is no need these days if you're doing it for performance. I'm sure other folks can give some advice about cloning from HD to SDD. There are tools to do it. Samsung includes them with their drives, the "Drive Magician" software.

I thought it was a good idea to partition the hard drive back in the days. I used to partition my drive into OS, apps, games, and storage drives. Now I install my OS in a smaller ssd, and I still partition my traditional secondary 2TB drive. If I clone the secondary drive to a 2TB ssd, it'll still retain the partition information, which I'm not sure if that's a good idea.

I'm a frequent partition person too. It makes it much easier to backup user data is it is all one one partition instead of mixed in various folders on the operating system drive.

There seems to be no performance hit, and there are organizational advantages to partitioning that benefit me and maybe others. My 500GB Samsung SSD is partitioned into 3 drives; the 4tb data drive is partitioned into 3 drives as well.

The other benefit of keeping the operating system and data on separate partitions (or drives) is that a full drive image takes less space and time to create.

I partition all my drives - HDD and SSD. Has nothing to do with PC performance, etc., but has to do with my performance.

I regularly clone SSD to SSD, and to HDD and reverse. Never a problem with TI using bootable media.

It's good for me to have a hard drive with three partitions, so I can save different kind of data separately. Partitioning won't influence hard drive's performance, except that a full C drive (system drive) will lead to low drive speed. Luckily, this problem can be solved by extending C drive (merge C and D is a way). By the way, cloning is a good way to upgrade your old disk.

When it comes to drives, especially my boot drive, I keep it isolated on its own physical drive just in case I have issues with it so my data doesn't get ruined along with it. I keep my data on separate drive which I back up regularly just in case they should fail. I would buy a smaller boot drive and keep the programs and data on a completely different drive.

I also partition my SSD to have multiple OSes on it. Nothing wrong with doing partitions at all.
Yeah, they can also make life easier when you backup things.

Thanks for the replies. It's good to know that I don't have to worry about merging partitions when I replace my current 2tb drive with a 2tb ssd.

My Gigabyte Brix J1900 mini-PC, only has accommodations for a single 2.5" drive (SSD). I wanted to dual-boot Win7 64-bit and Linux Mint. So I installed a 300GB SSD, and partitioned it into two parts, each 150GB. I installed Win7 first, set the size of the primary partition (MBR style), then I installed Linux, and it automatically took the rest of the free space, and created the swap partition in addition to the main Linux partition.
