Think of a partition as a container for data, like one drawer of a file cabinet. Each partition uses a file system to store and name data. Windows 98 and Me use the FAT32 file system. FAT32 allows for greater maximum partition sizes and stores data more efficiently than the FAT16 file system used by DOS and the first versions of Windows 95.

Windows NT introduced the NTFS file system, which uses space more efficiently and offers better data security. Windows 95, 98, and Me can't "see" the data in an NTFS partition; however, Windows 2000 and XP can read from and write to both NTFS and FAT32 partitions.

People commonly do this so if they need to reinstall Windows by reformatting they don't also lose their data.

There are other reason for multiple partitioning of a single drive. One of the other biggest reasons (this applies to FATx and NTFS partition mainly because they are prone to fragmentation) is to keep you windows partition less fragmented. And another reason is easer data management. I for example have 4 partitions 1: system (windows), 2: Programs (games), 3: Downloads, 4: Temp.

Partition is when people are too lazy to switch a HD. Ghost + clone + 2 HDs = Sweet. But that's just me 'cause I still have a few 20GB HDs for OS installation.

I have heard that argumenbt plenty of times saying that it would be less prone to fragmentation and I think that is a bunch of BS. The only reason I so you don't lose your data, but of course you should not rely on this alone for backup purposes as a HDD can die and you will lsoe your info.

I currently have 2 partitions which is C: OS, apps, games etc. and D: Sorage for my MP3's, movies and all that other important stuff.

How is it when people are too lazy? Any HDD with a OS on it has partitions...

Google is your friend!

Some day I'm going to build an internet search engine. It will scour the web searching for words or phrases that the user types in a box. It will then display the findings on the users screen, so that they can easily navigate to the sites found.
Which plan would you people prefer?
$20 per month... $200 per year... $1000 for lifetime subscription?
