partition problem

i am trying to partition my harddrive, but its not working. i run osx lion 10.7.2 on a 13in macbook pro (summer 2011 base model). i have tried disk utility and disk utility in the recovery partition, but i keep getting this message:

Partition failed with the error:

Couldn’t modify partition map because file system verification failed.


Does anyone know why i get this?

Have you verified the disk in Disk Utility?

Yep, and it starts out fine and then it quits and tells me there's an error.

I'm updating to 10.7.3 now, I will try it again after the update is done, but I don't think that will make any difference, but you never know sometimes.

in the end, after trolling countless ubuntu forums and apple forums, the trick was restarting while holding the shift key. who would have thought.
