I'm basically look to create a separate partition on my new laptop where one would have vista and one would have ubuntu, but in the vista install screen there is no option to create partitions. Is there a way to do this or would I need separate software to create the partitions before I try to install...Ubuntu is currently downloading and is very slow so I would like to get the vista part done first

Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Create and format hard disk partitions

Enjoy Ubuntu!

Diskpart is your command that is included in the Vista command line shell:

You can access a Vista command line shell from booting off the Vista Install CD somehow.. they don't make it very obvious / easy to do... let's see...
here's a guide showing you one way to boot Vista from DVD and get to a command prompt / diskpart utility:

I seem to remember being MASSIVELY disappointed in the brain damaged limitations of diskpart and the Vista DVD's shell when I tried using it. For one there was no way to non destructively resize a system partition. There were other limitations that annoyed me.

So in general I use the free SYSRESCCD bootable utility CD and just use the gparted partition manager tool on it. Of course you can do the same with the Ubuntu or other LiveCD LINUX CD.

Your new laptop may be running an OEM minisetup. If so you can resize partitions after setup is complete. The option will be found in disk manager. For a normal "insert the dvd" Vista setup there is an option to create/delete/choose partitions.

Why Vlite and not just pop in the DVD? Vista can partition during normal setup.
