Partition Magic, whats the point?

I have Partition Magic 3.0. It will not let me extend a partition into free space. The only function seems to be to is to make an existing partition smaller, or to delete a partition. I can see no way to create more partitions or make an existing one larger.

I had some free space on a drive and it would only let me format to HPFS, NTSF, or unformatted..no FAT options. I had to use WD drive utility to recapture my free space.

I am failing to see the point in this program. It does not do anything I could not do with FDISK. Either I am missing something or the documentation is sorely lacking.

correct me if i'm wrong but isn't partition magic up to version 6?? i would think they would have improved upon that problem since version 3

jinsonxu,

It will only let me make partitions smaller, not larger, nor extend existing partitions into free space. So..what good is it?

JonJon,

Was it a problem? That's what I am trying to find out. I have no intention of giving them more money for a POS program.

Partition magic is anything but a POS program. It works great, no questions about it. That was an ignorant comment

Denon,

Then then can't I do anything with it other than what I have posted. Again..what good is it if all one can do is make an existing partition smaller? or delete a partition.

thats wierd.. i made larger partitions with it a bunch of times.. it doesnt just make them smaller... PM is a fantastic program if you know how to use it.

i've been dying to get a copy of pm6 but i just can't see paying 60 bucks for it...anyone wanna sell me a burnt copy? LOL

I've made existing partitions larger and smaller. If fact, recently I used it to delete 2 Linux partitions, then resize the Windows partition to use the space gained. Worked like a charm.

PM is up to version 6 now. I'm using 5.0 Pro. It's an awesome program; you can make partitions larger or smaller, convert them to different file systems, spread free space over multiple partitions, or do any other number of cool things that FDISK can only dream about.

You should really get a more recent version of the program before you judge it.

If you know all the features of Partition Magic 5 and know how to use them, it is a great program. It is worth every single penny of $60. Sure, there are programs out there which do similar things, but I haven't run across a program which can do all the things Partition Magic can.

yeah i'm sure it is but 60 bucks is alot for an app you're not going to use every day, like i would play a game or maybe use word.....that's why i want to pirate it 🙂

I'm having teh same problems with Ver5.0 can anyone help?

It won't let my FREESAPCE be added toa new partition.\

BlueVenus,

Sounds to me like there's a problem between the keyboard & your chair.😉

Try upgrading the user,it might help.

BTW i use PQMagic all the time & create resize both ways up & down.

Remember the limitations of Win/DOS partitions and partitions in general. You can only have 4 primary partitions total, but one of them can be an extended partition which can contain a huge number of logical drives. FAT16 partitions can only go up to 2GB in size, no matter how much drive space you have free. You have to convert to FAT32 in order to go larger.

I don't believe Partition Magic 3.0 supported FAT32. Ergo, no partitions larger than 2GB (as far as Windows or DOS are concerned). If it did support FAT32, then I don't know. I do remember one version that you had to forcibly enable support for it.

Partition Magic is a great program, as long as it doesn't screw up your FAT and make your disk unreadable. 😀 It happened to me once though I've used it several times successfully in the past to resize partitions up and down.

It's not necessary, true, but it does make working with partitions much, much easier.

BlueVenus:

As others have pointed out, Partition Magic 3.0, is a rather old version of
the program. You may be expecting it to do things that were not supported
until later versions.

What type of partition are you trying to extend? How big is it now?

Creating new partitions should be as easy as choosing the free space
on the drive and giving the menu command to create a partition.
If PM will let you create a partition as unformatted, then you should
be able to go back to that partition from DOS/Windows and format it
any way you want.

If you are using the WD utilities, are you also using the drive overlay
software EZ-drive? If so, that might explain why partition magic has
problems with your drive. Overlay software can keep low-level utilities
like PM from seeing the true values for the drive geometry.

Also, what exact version of partition magic are you using? There have
been patches out to resolve issues with past versions; and there have
been releases of "special edition" versions that did not have all the
functionality of the retail version.

I've been familiar with Partition Magic since version 1.0 and I can
honestly say that when it works for you, there is nothing that can
beat it. And over the years, each version has managed to be
consistently better than the last. (When it first appeared, there
were *experts* in the computer industry who said what it did was
impossible).
