I would like to dual boot XP and Linux 8.1.....how do I partition the drive with XP already on it, currently just one 40 Gig partition...FAT32 I would like to split it evenly between both operating systems 20 and 20. Will Partition Magic 6.0 work with XP?...and will I run into any problems with this combo?

I can only assume that you meant Mandrake 8.1. There is no such thing as Linux 8.1

As you are using FAT32, you don't really need PM. Of course it will work but its main feature is that it can handle NTFS. If you don't want to spend the extra bucks, there are plenty free software that resize ( I also assume that you wanted to do this, right) a FAT32 parition. Like fips.

And you can't just have 20G + 20G = 40G. Linux at least need two seperate partition - root and swap.

Maybe that's the wrong way to go, it may be better and less work to just purchase a 20 Gig 7200 harddrive tonight and set it up on another ide port and away I go.

No there is nothing wrong with that, unless you have an unstable power supply. But sure buying a new harddrive is safer.

XP requires PM 7.0. NTFS makes no diffference to it. The second HDD is a better idea. I have that set up on all systems using mobile racks. That lets me key select which OS I want to boot to. Each drive is then independent and each OS runs in its own owlrd without regard to the other.

You can also get extra trays and have back up drives for each OS for a very reasonable amount. They can be "ghosted" or cloned using DC 4 as often as necessary.

PM 6.0 can't modify NTFS partitions on a System that had Win XP installed, even if you're running PM 6 from 2000/Me.

<< Also, there are updates for Partition Magic (7.01) and Drive Image (5.01) available at www.powerquest.com >>

I have a downloaded retail version of both (a.k.a. illegal). I guess I can't update it, huh? I mean, I have the serial numbers and all, but I don't wanna get busted. What do these patches fix?

You are an ass and a thief.

By the by, AKA means also known as. So, to say that the retail version is known as "illegal" is stupid and makes no sense.

PS: I want you to get busted.

Well, this is where I stand at the moment.......Went to staples to buy Mandrake 8.1 and didn't because I said to myself how good can it be for $79.......and this thought came to mind because I have Windows 2000 Pro at home that I paid $280.00 for. To make a long story short this is being setup because I don't like the way my XP home version runs when I host a counterstrike game. Besides having other wizs telling me that Mandrake is the way to go but if you have to run a windows version, NT or 2000 Pro are the best choices. So I decided to install the 2000 Pro/NTFS on the 20 Gig and slaved it to my 40 Gig XP drive but I don't get the chance to dual boot like I thought XP would do automatically. So I have more homework to do. Perhaps I have to make a run to the store tonight after work to buy the latest PM...can't remember my version I bought it about a year ago.....which was my second purchase of this program...look like I may be going for my third version......and who said running computers was cheap?
