Particle board doesn't take well to sanding

anything i can use to smooth this stuff out before painting it?

Throw it out and get actual wood. There is no way to make particle board not look like cheap crap.

I don't think it's possible to make cheap officemax/walmart furniture actually look like real furniture. I have enough of it and I hate it. Too bad real furniture is so expensive.

Best bet is probably to seal it with thinned out poly & sand that (rinse -n- repeat), then paint it.

yep ... thin it about 50/50 with paint thinner ...or maybe only 1/3 thinner. I've done that to keep particle board jigs from swelling when it gets damp. Although, living in Colorado now, that isn't neccesary.

Note that I've never actually tried painting over polyurethane. That might be kind of dicey.

veneer. buy some veneer, glue that on with some good glue or contact adhesive, and then paint on the wood veneer.

another option would be to bondo the particle board, then sand that down and primer that and paint.
