Best bet is probably to seal it with thinned out poly & sand that (rinse -n- repeat), then paint it.

yep ... thin it about 50/50 with paint thinner ...or maybe only 1/3 thinner. I've done that to keep particle board jigs from swelling when it gets damp. Although, living in Colorado now, that isn't neccesary.
