thinking about trying to do part time IT work. assuming i have the requisite skills, where are some places that i could do this? i've come up with:

major electronics retail stores
mom&pop's computer stores
web design shops

i'm also trying to look into ISPs and web hosting companies. not sure if they hire part timers but... is there a list of web hosts by geographic location? as far as ISPs go, i think we only have one in the area (small town).

any other places i've overlooked? i'm not pinpointing any specific area right now (hardware, web design, sales, etc.), just trying to get some ideas. thx

For the first post I was thinking one day a week... do those not exist anymore? i haven't worked part time in such a long time that i don't know. back in my teenage days i used to be able to do that, but then again, that was retail, not sure how it works with IT shops.

I'd suggest you post ads on local paper, PennySaver or worst, craigslist, and schedule people into your one-day-a-week...

Maybe try pawnshops. I don't know if they'd go for it, but maybe you could get a gig cleaning up the machines they get in.

unless you're going to do 20 hours in those 1 day... forget about it.

most companies consider part time to be working 20 hours... i dont know of a single company that would put the time/money/hours into training someone to work for 6 - 8 hours.

Bullshit. A lot of major nationwide retailers consider 10 hours per week the minimum for part time.

so.. again... do you think they're going to hire someone who only wants to work 1 day... for probably 5-6 hours?

i seriously doubt it.

companies that are too small to have even a single full time IT guy but are big enough to need some semi regular PC maintenance will be perfect for you. They only have needs & $$$ for a person who come in for a 4-5 hours.

now there's an interesting idea. it's worth a try, and would be perfect as a client to my business. thanks lxskllr!

I'm doing part time right now. I work for a company that let's you set your own availability, so I can go to class and work at the same time too. Check out the local craigslist. Also see if there's any local IT/computer school type place. They always have good contacts for jobs. That's where a bunch of people I met at this current HP/JPMorganChase project I'm working on got the info for the project. And yeah, the second you go on your own and hand out your phone number, you're going to start getting calls from everyone for every tiny little problem.

hi Mike, i already have a full time job so i'd only be able to work a part-time job (on site)... unless it's a part time job that i can do from home while eating dinner.

just keep in mind that once you do work for someone theyre going to call you next time it messes up....in the middle of your work day, odds are

a buddy of mine works as an IT support guy, and does stuff on the side...but just casual friends and such. $50 or $100 a pop, and dont be in a hurry to get it back. he usually gets 3 or 4 a month to handle.

private medical practices are all trying to switch to EMRs. You'd have to setup all the networking and then manage it $$$
