My friend just sent me this. I cant imagine what traffic is going to be like. Traffic is already really bad and its not like that section is going to get rebuilt over night either.

One quote in the article by SFGate that jumped out at me which I thought was completely ridiculus and stupid was this;

"Coming home is going to be a big big problem," said Geronimo, who commutes to work in San Francisco as draftsman. "Do you know how many terrorists are looking at this? They're getting ideas."

Yeah, because they didnt already know that bridges and overpasses can collapse, and their ultimate goal is to make traffic worse. :disgust:

Here is a link to that article; Text

LOOSE CHANGE ON THE INTERCHANGE

This is a conspiracy. Does it surprise anybody that this took place on 4/29?

1. 911-429= 482.

2. 482 is significant because it's EXACTLY what 911-429 equals. It was also George Bush's locker number in 9th-11th grade.

3. Everyone knows that gasoline can't melt steel and everyone knows that steel needs to turn into liquid before it loses its strength. This would be the FIRST TIME IN HISTORY that a fire from a gas truck has melted the Macarthur Maze. If it was even possible, you'd see it burning down every week.

5. George Bush drove over that road shortly before that tanker burned. It wasn't the president Bush, but another guy that happens to have the same name.

6. You'll notice #4 is missing. Dick Cheney stole it.

You can always exit 580 or 880, and go on the streets to get on to 80, not that terrible, less than a 5 mile detour.

LOL! Sure sounds like you've never made this commute. A car broken down on the side of the freeway causes a half-hour back-up, THIS will be a major FUBAR event in the commute for people. I'm REALLY glad I don't commute any more.

I did this many times when I lived in the Berkeley/Oakland area... during rush hour it saves tons of time to go on west grand because it drops you off right at the toll plaza...

True, and if you only have a few people doing this, there can be a nice time savings as you bypass some of the back-up, but if EVERYONE is having to do this...I forsee quite a mess in the daily commute both ways.

Um, the best way on to the Bay Bridge from East Bay (Richmond/Berkeley) is thru I-880 and West Grand. I can guarantee you VERY FEW PEOPLE do this. It only works if you have Fastrak too, but yea. It's the best way.

The commute is already terrible in the morning. I don't go to The City in the morning, but I know when I go on the weekends, its terrible. The 80 west where it goes towards the Toll Plaza is almost always backed up to the maze, and without the I-880 shortcut I use, it takes literally 20 - 25 min to get onto the bridge (even with Fastrak).

Thank goodness its almost hte end of the semester, and I'll have every reason to move back to home in the South Bay and deal with the easiest highway system down there.

It does not. You will be getting off the 5 onto 580W and onto the Bay Bridge. That part is only the onramp to 580E fomr the bay bridge.

Nope. Once you get into the Bay Area, stick on the peninsula and not the east bay. East bay has the most terrible traffic ever

Yup, just a short detour, at 5am Sunday morning. Come Monday it's going to take hours to get through that mess.

No, but they DID compare it to a terrorist attack and said "this could happen if...."

Chaotic Commute Follows Collapse of Bay Area Overpass

And in the Chron "Traffic Mostly Smooth in Morning Commute

That's because the Chronicle knows how jacked up traffic is there normally. By "smooth" they mean "cars move from time to time."

I drove by yesterday afternoon from 880N to 80. It's a little crazy seeing the collapsed section, brought back memories of '89.

Depends on if you trust the NY Times or the Chronicle :)

I took BART (the train) this morning and it was no more crowded than usual. Plus it was free.

Whats this? I must have missed that part of the news. How long will BART to the east bay be free? Or was that just today?

Syringer, did you notice that there were more cars for each train?

zylander: IIRC, free BART was today only.

My report on my commute:

I drove to The City from Berkeley at ~4:25 PM. Traffic was congested on the Eastshore heading to the bridge. Usually all 6 lanes are moving so its somewhat easy to get across to the left. Unfortunately, it took a while longer because traffic stopped for a bit.

I have 7 ppl so I can hit the carpool lanes. The bridge is FREAKING EMPTY. Usually there's a slowdown after the Yerba Buena tunnel, but there was no slowdown at all. No slowdown heading to 5th Street too. I exited there as usual.

I finished feeding the meter near City Hall @ 4:52 PM. Easy commute for me today. Time taken is roughly the same, and it might even be a few minutes shorter. The delay on the Eastshore is equivalent to the reduction in time with the empty bridge.

I drove BACK from The City at 7:21 PM (that was when I was on the onramp from Van Ness). Slowdown as usual where the bridge begins due to the original retrofit. As I crossed to the East Bay, there was no slowdown on 80 East where the 580 onramp is closed.

I was satisfied with my commute today.

BTW, today was fun.

The school newspaper said the STEEL MELTED.

My metals professor had a FIELD DAY with this. He talked about how he was called on by CBS to go on TV to explain to the public that the bridge did NOT ****** MELT. And then people used the analogy of a BARBEQUE? LoL. People in my car today were talking about steel melting too. Gosh, it was terrible. I was pissed as an engineer.
