I have an 06 lexus rx400h which has been such a good vehicle I think I'd like to keep it a while longer. Due to its age, the front drivers side seat has considerable wear. The rest of the interior (aside from the drivers side carpet) looks like new. I would like to replace the seat with one in nicer condition. Is there a website that could tell me what model years have the same seat? (i.e. 2006-8) I also think the rx350 would probably use the same seat since they are very similar vehicles but would like to confirm this before dropping the $$ on it.

Have you checked with upholstery shops to see about getting seats redone?
Yes, the idea crossed my mind... I always think of these shops only doing home furnishings rather than auto. Good idea.. and I think I'll investigate that further.

I would think there is an auto upholstery shop near you?

That way, you don't have to worry about fit or wiring or anything like that.

The only thing that is a bit of a concern would be how accurate the shop could color match the leather

I'd be concerned about the side airbags being able to come through the stitching, assuming they're seat mounted.

good point.. there are side impact air bags in the side of the seat as well as side curtain airbags located in the inside roof rails too. Actually the leather that makes up the side of the seat is in nice condition. In my case the only part of the seat that needs refurbishing is where your butt is planted and where the outer parts of the thigh make contact with the seat. Maybe three is a way to clean, strip, and re-dye/color the existing leather only where it needs it

A good shop will be able to handle the seat air bags. There are a few ways to deal with recovering such seats.

I also wanted to redo my driver front seats due to 14 years of wear. I took it to a reputable auto/home upholstery shop. The manager usually doesn't touch the upper part of my seats where the airbag was part of the stitching of the leather. He just told me to find an OEM replacement online and he would be more than willing to install it. Of course he also said that if I were to get an OEM that I could do it myself.

I have yet to do the upper part of my seat. I found black durable duct tape that matches it very well. I know... duct tape.

You should always be able to replace at least the center panels, though. Those are the ones with all the wear.

That should not involve altering the side panels over the air bags.
