PPA got ya, eh? not much you can do, AFAIK. my roommate got one for only being at a handicapped spot for like 1 minute. apparently that's serious business to the PPA (well of course a $301 ticket is 😛)

I see way to many people with handicap tags. It feels like maybe there isn't a lot of oversight about who gets them.

LOL, I originally read that as you thinking a lot of overweight people get them, and I was like "true, true."

sadly you are both right. being "obese" is a reason to get one. you just have to be able to claim you can't walk 200 ft without a rest.

Also in chicago a few aldermen got in trouble for having them and giving them out. Since meters in chicago shot up after they sold the rights to them..

They should have special 'obese' disabled parking spots at the far ends of car parks...

I'd fight it. Never heard of a fucking blue meter. And if it's night time when you don't even have to feed meters, who'd even think to inspect the damn thing anyway?

And it is nice to hear that you left your car there instead of driving drunk.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. I beleive blue parking spaces's are handicaped all over the US. While i have never seen a blue parking meter (In ILL handicaped plates/placard lets you park for free) it should be in the rules of the road book he got.

No, I'm not saying it's an excuse and he SHOULD get a pass on it, but damn, $300 is not something I'd just give them without spending an hour of my time trying to fight it. Especially *if* the parking space wasn't blue and there were no blue lines or any handicap markings. A blue fucking meter? Give me a break, that's stupid.

So I was out late last night and parked at a meter. It turned out to be a blue meter (I didn't even know they had handicapped meters), thus handicapped. Should I appeal? I didn't pick up my car untill later today.

Honestly, there aren't any legal issues I can think up that you can bring up as a defense.

I have seen so many Arrogant A-Holes that think it is okay for them to park in handicap spaces and plead ignorance if caught.

Handicap parking spaces have to accommodate wheelchairs hence wider than regular parking space and they are mark so that idiots can't plead ignorance once caught.

I have no sympathy for people who park in handicap parking, especially after seeing some thugs pull into a spot while a little old lady who could barely walk had to park much further away. OP's handle serves him well.
I often see Aholes with HUMMER or over size trucks with dually parks in handicap 7 pregnant mother spaces, there reasoning is that their ride is too big to fit in the regular parking spaces.

You can try and fight it and explain what happened but I'm sure the lines were painted blue and had a big handicap sign painted on the spot as well. It doesn't hurt to try and fight it.

It's not like he did it on purpose.

If you truly did not do it on purpose than you should plead your case, it happens. You deserve whatever you get, however.

Again it wasn't a space like in a parking lot. It was a handicapped meter. The ground was not marked but it was a blue meter. So pretty much the only way it is wider is if you park farther from the curb.

I got a similar ticket at 2nd and Market at 2am on a weekend night a few years ago, didn't realize it was a handicapped spot...didn't even realized I had a ticket until the next morning because there was so many club flyers on the windshield when I got back to the car I just threw them on the seat. I had to appeal it 2 or 3 times and then write a letter to the PPA which was still denied, finally got a hearing..went in and sat down with some chick who hadn't even read the letter, explained the situation and said I wasn't refuting that I parked in the spot but it was an honest mistake. She dismissed the charges. Bottom line, fight the ticket and expect to be rejected a few times, keep fighting it and keep fighting it.

Oh and ATOT is the wrong place to ask for advice for things like this because it's a bunch of people who claim they have never gone 1mph over the speed limit. Don't listen to all the self-righteous assholes.

in my opinion actions are actions, intended or not. sorry didnt know that gun was loaded, i honestly didnt mean to shoot your son in the head. obviously this case is a much lesser degree but the fact is that ya did the act in question. i wouldnt have liked it much but i would have paid the ticket. same as if i was caught speeding. just my opinion though.

In college my dad came to my class to pick me up after I got out to take me to the doctor. I just had a tumor removed in my leg and I was on crutches, so he parked in the handicapped spot right in front of the building for me. When I got out of class there was a cop behind him writing him a ticket for parking in a handicapped spot.

I crutched over and gave the cop a sad look and he stopped writing the ticket and tore it up. 🙂

you beat the cop senseless with your crutches didn't you.

how the fvck are people supposed to know blue automatically means handicapped if it's not marked. What bs.

Screw that! I would totally fight that. If the fine was $50 or something, I would just accept it. $300 is outrageous though. They don't deserve that money. Take pictures at night without flash like somebody else suggested and go to court.

If it wasn't clearly marked as handicapped, he'd have no way to know he wasn't able to park there. A blue parking meter - at night especially - is not enough. OP hasn't said whether there were any other markings to indicate that it was a handicapped spot.

What the hell is a blue meter? It wasn't labeled with a sign or a big painted wheelchair on the parking spot itself? If not, then that's a crock of shit. I've never heard of a blue meter before and if I got a ticket for parking at one i'd be pretty pissed.

I have seen plenty of blue meters along east coast cities. They existed 30 years ago when I was in the Boston area.

20 years ago, I can remember them in the DC area.

Frankly I call shens on the "it wasn't marked" BS. I want to see a photo of the site. Or even directions via Google earth plx.

It was an honest mistake... I didn't know they had handicap meters. I would appeal and just be upfront and completely honest about it. At worst you'd have to pay the same amount.

My roommate in college got a ticket for parking at a spot he knew was handicapped during a snowstorm. He appealed and told the judge "handicapped people don't drive in blizzards." That didn't work out too well for him.
