That was in between the time of Murder She Wrote and CSI. So it was a lean period for crime investigation

Never take a bat to a gun fight.

If you carry a baseball bat around in your car and take it out after an argument... you deserve to be injured and possibly shot.
That's the risk you take when you up the ante on a fight.

Fists are one thing, but weapons are another.

I dunno, I feel like if the guy's kneecap was in fact shattered then it should probably be considered self defense. It's not like you can claim that you weren't aiming for his head or something.

All other details aside, that's one thing that is indisputable. You can't easily fake a broken kneecap.

The key witness testimony said he was defending his father, but they later changed their story.
Later they said Campbell was backing away after attacking.
So if the attack was over, it wasn't defense. (stupid I know)

Once Campbell saw the gun, he probably tried to back down and was shot anyway.
You can't shoot someone who is no longer a threat and is backing down.

Hitting someone in the head with a metal bat is attempted murder if they don't die. If they die it's murder. Shooting said lune is defense against murder, not assault and not murder. The DA in that little shit hole town needs to jailed for life, he's corrupt and out of control.

I didn't know they had the CSI technology back then to focus in on the reflection from a puddle of bum piss from an ATM camera 2 blocks away and then analyze the blur in the photo to determine that Campbell was backing away from the father.

Yes you can. Attacking someone with a metal bat, going for their head is attempted murder. A long as that guy is present and holding the bat he is a threat - he chose to escalate and the defender not knowing his intentions, did what he needed to to defend his father's life. Batman should have dropped to the ground if he "saw the gun" as you claim, which we don't know. The bad guy already "stopped fighting" once, only to get get a better weapon than his fists. Maybe he was "stopping" to once again retrieve a better weapon. All that said, in less than five seconds you don't go from beating a man in the head with a metal bat to completely surrendering, or convincing the defender that you have surrendered. Reality check.

I found the article to be a bit strange with the facts. It also seems odd that they would push for a harsh penalty and that they would coerce the witnesses if they could have easily made a case for self defense. maybe they didn't want to deal with racism claims, idk. But if you use deadly force like this, you have to deal with the consequences. I'm sure the dead guy wasn't going to continue fighting once he saw a gun. Or once you fire a shot to show you're not fucking around. And if the older dude was seriously getting hurt, I doubt they would have charged Jr.

But really, it was over a parking space. Everyone involved was a douche

When Campbell saw what was happening he raced across the busy street. Rich Jr. says he stepped between Campbell and his father, hands raised, trying to calm Campbell. That's when Rich Jr. says Campbell threw the first punch, "It was like getting hit by a hammer. They were hammer blows. He just was outta control. He was someone who didn't want to listen to reason or anything like that at the time."At that point, Rich Jr., went into the deli, he says. Campbell then walked over to his car and Rich Sr. followed him to hand him his cell phone and a sweatshirt that had come off during the fight. From inside the deli, Rich Jr. saw Campbell swinging the bat at his father, so he reached under the cash register and grabbed a gun. Rich Jr. says, "From the time that bat came out to the time it was over, it was a matter of four seconds, five seconds. My training just kicked in."

That doesn't even make sense. You're going to get punched by a boxer, and then when the fight is over, walk away like that, leaving your family outside with the boxer? You're the father of the guy who just got his face pummeled by a boxer - you're going to pick up the boxer's sweatshirt, and pick up his cell phone, and walk over to the guy to give back to him??

He was trying to do a Victor Ortiz and hug him in the middle of a fight..

Jokes aside, yea it feels like a lot is left out. I mean really walking inside for no reason pretty much in the middle of an altercation?

that's just one of the things that bothered me. Also the guy was a off duty police i am sure he has connections to get someone out FAST to tow it or at least ticket it. Also if the guy was kicking both of there ass's why would he feel the need to get a bat?

Also why would they stick a sticker on the car?

but how badly slanted the article is makes me hard to believe it happened how they are claiming.
