One of the ways they cleaned up NYC was to get rid of the peep shows, porn shops, and hookers in NYC. They then started cracking down on the most rudimentary crimes, including subway turnstile hoppers.

That alone started to clean up the city so that normal people could live here. Violent crime dropped precipitously.

You want to send a message? Lock her up for the maximum sentence, including taking prior incidents into account, without any hope of early release.

Bringing the dregs in and allowing petty crime is the way to allow worse crimes.

Mostly this. Though I agree with charging the driver for driving under the influence. However the mere smell of pot should not have been enough for stopping them. Here in Vancouver the police basically turn a blind eye to pot 90 percent of the time or more for everyday use. The US should learn from this.
