The wife and I took a European vacation about 6 months (or so who knows) ago..

I didnt think I was going to like paris at all.. Ended up being my favorite place.. The french were a lot nicer than the english I thought..

I was in Bali last month. Surfing was good, but I probably wouldn't go back. It's just not as friendly as most of what I've seen in SE Asia. The cab driver are mean in the way they try to rip you off, and the guys on the street are a lot more aggressive than what I see elsewhere (I'd say about as bad or worse than Bangkok). It's so touristy that it's not that great on your wallet.

If you're planning to go to stay in a resort hotel and not leave, it would probably be a great experience and the service will be amazing. If you plan to go to an outlying island and surf, it might be cool too. If you're going to be part of the mass of tourists in the south, it's not that special.

Just my opinion.

There are a lot of Japanese tourists... that's a plus! 😀

If you like doing outdoorsy things, I'd vote for SE Asia. If you want to avoid tsunami afflicted areas, you might want to explore tahiti, bora bora, fiji, et al. Fiji is one of the more affordable groups of islands. English is the official language there, there are no major diseases (like malaria), and the diving/snorkeling is some of the best in the world.
