Lol @ Torrance on a 400-500k budget
Shit, I knew the South Torrance houses and those closer to PCH were in the 700-800 range but I had no idea that even in central Torrance 400-500k would only get you a condo. FML I need to get out of LA.

Move to Palmdale. Lots of big lots for 500k.

That 400-500k in Torrance grants you best Japanese food in America within a 10 minute drive. And great weather.

Boston? They've got to really love the four seasons and the presence of an unpredictable climate including snow in the winter.

"Don't like the weather? Wait a few minutes, it'll change."
I remember the meteorologist being featured on the cover of Sunday's Parade magazine. He's suited up to play tennis, on the court with racket in hand looking up at the drizzle--not the weather he had forcasted for that morning.

North Carolina
I agree, either Charlotte or Raleigh/Durham/Cary area. Both have a decently large Asian population.

In the RDU area, there's a chinese grocery store (Grand Asia in Cary).

Edit: I live in Raleigh, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

Having lived there (not Asian myself) the Dallas/Fort Worth area seems like it would be a pretty good fit. Yes it gets hot and humid, but there are plenty of good houses for $200k or less, and pockets of Asians throughout (look particularly in the Arlington area IMO). Snow/cold does happen, but rarely (and nothing compared to Ohio).

I dunno about that 🙁

I don't know what standards we're up to, but IMO this is a perfectly livable house for 2 retirees:

https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sa...4,-97.084551,32.618918,-97.223425_rect/12_zm/

2 bd, 2 ba, 2 car garage, $140k, 1000sf, large porch and backyard, 80s/90s construction, decent middle/lower middle class neighborhood. Schools may be a worry, but not for retirees.

Nothing wrong with that house.

Others in the area are bigger and commensurately more expensive.

In Bedford, nice middle class neighborhood:

$200k, 4 bd, 2.5 ba, 2 car garage, 2300sf, needs updating (tile, wallpaper, window treatments) but it's a nice house on a huge lot with lots of mature trees. I would absolutely live in that house.

They can’t be so picky about weather. Otherwise if they are ok with smog instead of air, and a mask, then I’ve heard there are lots of Chinese stores and groceries in China

Those aren’t bad. They should take the Bedford house. It’s only 1.1 miles from Turning Point Beer 😀 I’d expect for it to sell for well over 200k though. The ad states they want bidders’ highest/best offers by 2200 tonight.

Yeah, I'm looking at west and maybe south Torrance, 3bd and I'm going in with 800-900k... and that gets me a 1600sqft place from the 1950-1960s.

If they're retiring, this is the wrong way to go.

Only if they don't have the money...otherwise Torrance is a great place to retire. Not close to a Chinese market though. It's really more of a Japanese area.

My parents currently live in a sort of rural area 45 minutes outside Cleveland and they want to buy a house to retire in before they no longer qualify for a mortgage due to no longer having work.

They don't like where they live right now, and they've lived there for over 25 years. They hate the cold and snow, but also hate the heat and humidity. Property prices are entirely stagnant in their community as well.

Also, they're totally Chinese and haven't integrated much into American or western life, so ideally they need a Chinese grocery nearby, authentic Chinese restaurants, etc. An actual Chinatown would be nice but I guess not necessary.

They want to get a house that will appreciate in value.

According to this article, there are some good choices:

https://www.curbed.com/2018/1/9/16868250/2018-real-estate-markets-to-watch

Austin - ok?
Dallas - ok?
Denver - gets too cold with too much snow
Fort Lauderdale - too hot and humid
Nashville - don't know too hot/humid
Portland - too rainy and overcast
Raleigh-Durham - don't know too hot/humid
Salt Lake City - gets too cold with too much snow
Seattle - too rainy and overcast

Thoughts on these areas and the real estate market in these places?

updates in bold. I would suggest your parents learn to integrate a bit more and then move to somewhere like ~Albuquerque, New Mexico.

San Gabriel Valley - it's where all the Chinese are flocking to. Every newcomer on my block has been Chinese for the past several years. I think they are now 70% of the homeowners on my block.

...uh, what were those people before they were Chinese?

They were probably "Han" before they were Chinese. However, they could have been Zhuang, Hui, Man, Uyghur, Wiao, Yi, Tujia, Zang, Mongol, Dong, Bouyei, Yao, Bai, Chosen, Hand, Li, Kazak, Dai, She, Lisu, Dongxiang, Gelao, Laho, Wa, Sui, Naxi, Qiang, Tu, Mulao, Xibe, Kirgiz, Jingpo, Daur, Salar, Blang, Maonan, Tajik, Pumi, Archang, Nu, Ewenki, Gin, Jino, Deang, Bonan, Russ, Yugur, Uzbek, Monba, Oroqen, Derung, Hezhen, Gaoshan, Lhoba, Tatar, or any other ethnic group before the unification of "China."

I'd probably shoot for NC. I kinda want to move there too.
Yea, after reading the other "serious" replies in this thread, California is the "correct" answer if money wasn't a concern, but, in real life, seems like NC would have the mild enough summers and winters to mostly fit the weather requirement, and big enough of cities to have good access to Chinatown/Chinese social clubs.

So it's conceivable that they could be She-Man?

Fayetteville, AR or Dallas, TX

Dallas has much bigger Asian community of course due to the metro size. The Fayetteville area does have one too though. The university and many businesses in that area bring in many cultures/nationalities.
