A+ is the first step...

off a cliff?

LOL. First off, A+ is not worthless, even by itself. There is no way it can hurt you. Plus, I agree with everyone else, goto college, its the best experience. You might find out that you want to do something different than computer work. Plus, seeing your screen name, join the club lacrosse team (Assuming you don't goto a huge school, where the lacrosse team is insanely good) or join a frat. You will meet a ton of people that way.

no college, some A+ bullshit:
no friends, no future (no play + no $$)

you really can't be that stupid.. or maybe u are.

Having friends is independent of wether you go to school or not. Not ONE of my current friends I met through school. And college isn't for everyone.

That is a VAST over-simplification and typical of many kids in college. "I'm in college now, when I get out now the world will spread it's cheeks & grease up for me."

The real world will be a harsh awakening if you think that way.

BTW, ON topic - Go to college. But if you buy into the above mentioned mentality I will personally bitch-slap you into the next century.

A bachelors degree doesnt always equal fun or money. Seriously it doesnt. There are plenty of college graduates working not so great jobs, and there are plenty of people without college degrees that have good jobs. A college degree doesnt mean as much as it use to, unless you have experiance to back it up. Im not telling this guy not to go to college, Im just saying, a college degree is worthless these days unless you have experiance, and a lot of drive and ambition.

Well at least he plans on doing something. My brother doesn't want to go to college, doesn't want a certification in anything, he just wants to work at a grocery store or do hard labor for chump change.

Ok, I was advocating college as well (still am), but many of the "go to college" zealots appear to still be *in* college. As Viper pointed out, you'll all have a very rude awakening once you've been handed a bit of reality. Also, it seems many advocate the college decision because of all the friends/fun/excitement; again, it's real nice to enjoy your experience on someone elses dime. What are you going to do when you graduate and can't find a job because you have no experience?

Ive worked in the grocery biz. You dont need a college degree to make money in it. When I worked in the grocery biz, the store director, he had done "hard labor" stocking for 10 years, he then worked his way up to a $150,000 + bonuses each year, plus some great stock options(at the time). You can start at the bottom of companies and work your way up into decent money, if you have the drive and ambition, it takes longer, but to say your brother will always work for chump change is not correct. If he sticks with it, and does a good job and puts in the extra effort, eventually he'll make it up a rung in the ladder, and so on, its possible.

As for WHSLacrossekid, certs men jack sh!t if a college degree is next to worthless without experiance, certs are even more worthless. I would NOT go in to IT, period. It might help if you tell us what feild you want to go into.

Sure, there are *always* exceptions, but how many stockers eventually make $150k/year? I'd say about 0.01%, if that many. 10 years is a long, long time, and there's no way I'd spend that long making barely minimum wage as a stocker in hopes of maybe making a little more some day.

A degree doesn't mean as much as it used to because EVERYONE has then now and you are usually expected to have one. There are always exceptional stories about some guy who started in the copy room and became CEO but your odds are much much better of getting a good job if you have a degree. Many times experience is easier to get as well, since you can do internships and research as part of your education.

A crew chief on a night crew can pull over $30k year. Most of the management at the store I was at, worked their way up into their positions.

Part of the problem is I don't know what I want to do. I always wanted to deal with computers, but how long is the field gonna be around?

I eventually want to start a business of my own, well as soon as possible.

Ok, so we know you want to deal with computers and start a business of your own; methinks you need to do some thinking and find out *exactly* what you want to do. "Computers" means absolutely nothing in terms of career. Saying you want to deal with computers could mean anything from data entry to someone who does custom paint jobs on cases or something.

College isn't for everyone. If your brother wants to do manual labor, he can do that. But the OP was just posting about whether he should take AP Calc in HS, so he's obviously not an idiot - and if you're taking a college class in HS, then you should GO TO COLLEGE.

why does everyone on here cry about the current state of IT jobs? If you really thought it was gonna stay how it was in 97-2000, thats your fault, everyone knew that it was gonna come down. Its already been mentioned in this thread about 100% placement and my school has a high placement too. Three of my friends who graduated this summer all landed jobs. You also have to look if you have been getting interviews and not jobs. If so, you might wanna work on your interviewing skills.

I've never been to college, I'm a HS grad. That's it. I make over 100K.

Times have changed, and I've been very lucky (so far).

Go to college if you can. At the very least, look into a Tech cert ala DeVry or ITT.

I have a few reservations about the school loan thing, but that's way off topic for this thread.

Whatever you do, please realize that you aren't going to make the big bucks fast. Alot of young people think that. It takes time and patience. I have a BS in Computer Science, A+, Net+, and CCNA. I'm at my first "real" job out of college and with no experience I'm making just shy of $30k in the midwest. Experience = gold.

Go to college...experience life on a campus. Take more courses related to your field as well as various types of humanity classes. You'll regret it if you don't.

I feel everyone should experience college life.
