Parents talking me into getting A+ Certification and getting a job out of HS...

Since I would rather not go to college. My mom wants me to get a certification of some sort and go to work at Agere or something out of HS.

Is that an option in this day/age? What certifications are necessary/good?
 

Go to college. You won't be able to find an IT job without a degree, and you'll end up sweeping floors at Burger King. Plus, why miss out on the most fun four years of your life?

Go to a junior college, take a few courses. You don't know what college has to offer you until you try it. If you want to work at techie part time, thats cool. Get your A+ certification and look around for decent part time job.

GO TO COLLEGE. seriously. when the IT industry dries up and your A+ means nothing, at least you'll have a degree to fall back on.

A+? No offense to A+ holders, but it's about as valuable as glasses to a blind man in the IT world. If that's what you're wanting to do, then I'd definitely go to college. The opportunities for the inexperienced in the IT world just isn't what it was 3-5 years ago.

There's a tough enough job market in the IT field for people with a college degree let alone someone with a HS diploma and an A+ cert.

Why not at least try community college? If you don't like it, then at least you tried it and didn't spend a ton of money. If you do, then you could finish the last 2 years at a regular 4-year school and get your degree. You'll have more options that way.

Agree with everyone else, College will open doors for you. You maybe can't appreciate this right now as an A+ cert would be easy to aquire, but go to college or kick yourself in the butt later. Good luck!

Well Agere has offices everywhere unless your talking head office. Depending on the postion I would imagine you would need more than just highschool to get in there. I know with Lucent they really liked you to have a degree, it didn't have to be a degree that was important to what you were doing but they liked you to have one to show you were smarter than the average smuck on the street.

No degree = no life (for most people) TO GO COLLEGE eventhough you dont like it. You'll apprecaite the life after college trust me on this one.

I am repeating what everyone has already said. Go to college. A degree in whatever major is better than any certification unless it's Cisco certification or something like that.

college: best 4 years of your life, crazy fun with your friends AND a promising future (fun + $$)

no college, some A+ bullshit: no friends, no future (no play + no $$)

you really can't be that stupid.. or maybe u are.
