I agree many antivirus software is useless these days. Most of the time they don't catch anything, and I've never seen one actually remove anything either.

I've removed dozens of viruses with multiple scanners, online bitdefender, bootscans, and antimalware/antispyware. Sometimes you need to get a customized removal tool, and for newer viruses there are no fixes sometimes. That's when it's time to nuke your drive(s).

AV software is utterly worthless if you're willing to voluntarily install malware.

By the way, this reminds me of a funny Twitter post I saw this morning:

Whoever invents a firewall that automatically checks Snopes before allowing mothers to send emails will make BILLIONS.

I locked down my parents computer (Vista) and told them to use a certain account with restricted privileges for day to day usage. I DID give them the admin password, but I specifically told them to use it only when you install something important (i.e: Dad installed IE8 a few days ago).

It's working like a charm, plus it prevents relatives who like "smileys" in their IM client from having any admin access.

I never took the computer away from them, I just made the seriousness of installing things clear with a password and warnings.

I wish virus scanner companies would stop just thinking about money, and actually get together and share their findings. Then we'd actually have higher quality virus detection.

And yeah I've never actually seen a scanner clean something it's usually "hey I just found this program and it's a virus. It's too late now though because it's running, but here's the path so you can delete it."

It turned out to be malware.

What's the deal anymore? I know they can't tell if it's legit so wtf.

lol, i just tried to install that into a VM. Anyone know any other good sites so I can totally trash my XP VM? (I have nothing better to do on a Friday night.)

That's always fun to do. I did that a while back.

Search for warez (make sure to install all those key gens too!), porn, screensavers, wallpapers (the ones that make you install stuff), oh and tool bars.

Heck, just search for "free". I managed to get adaware to detect about 400+ items by browsing sites like this using IE. I never actively installed anything, I just let IE's SwishCheeze(tm) technology do the work for me.
