Parents bought a new house In Palm Coast, Florida

What's it like down there? I few google searches showed me a warm paradise, but it's right near the atlantic coast! The house is like a good 5 miles from the coast though. Would hurricanes still be a major problem? I wont be moving down since I only have another year of school left (junior year in HS now) and I have a great job now making 385/week. Now that my parents are going to be down there I'm seriously considering a floridian university. What's one with a good biology program?

I think PAB lives down there... Hurricanes are a major problem for ALL of florida, and 5 miles in is far enough that you wont have to worry about storm surge though...

I went to the University of Florida which has an excellent medical program, you should definately check it out...

it rains a lot in Florida,

It doesn't snow much.

LOL

Actually, it hasnt rained all that much this past year... Normally, you can count on a 1-2 hour thunderstorm every summer afternoon at 4pm, but last summer it was pretty quiet, short of the 4 horrendous hurricanes that bashed us...

Hmm. Well ti's comfirmed. I'm moving down there. Parents already bougth the house plus 2 1/4 acre plots. The only thing that Ima have to find is health insurance. I currently have mass health which is provided by the state. I'm assuming sicne I'm moving out of state that it will be void. So now I have to find a good health insurance plan down there. I mean good because I actually have a chronic illness which costs 300+ a month in meds which I pay nothing for now.

Blue Cross Blue Shield offers individual health coverage... They arent bad as long as you get on the right plan and they dont try to screw you (like they did to me last year)

If you end up at UF, they have a free clinic on campus for students (its included in the ungodly low tuition)

I lived in Miami for a year, if that's any help... didn't like it much... too warm, muggy all the time, traffic sucks, crime is high, and it feels like Cuba

Yea, Miami is a fun place to visit for a day or two but i would hate living there... I loved living in Coral Springs (Ft. Lauderdale suburb) for 9 years, although its getting pretty crowded over there as well...

I'm over on the west coast in Sarasota now and i love it here. The population may be older, but everyone is friendly and the city is georgous....

Where in Coral Springs? (i may have asked you this before)

I used to live in Brookside (off of Wiles and Coral Springs drive, right behind Country Hills elementary). My parents still live there so i'm back there all the time...

BTW, that commute must SUCK.

Yeah it is. But after living in quincy (city, near boston) I've had enough of hte insensitvie unfestive rich attitute of most of hte people up here. And I hate the weather. I want somewhere quite. Forgot what the name of the song was but in it's lyrics he said "live in New York once but leave before you get to hard, live in North California once but leave before you get too Soft" Well I'm a little too hard now I need somewhere to relax and enjoy the sun while I go to school.

Not much in the way of schools in that area either. Univ. of Florida is a pretty good drive from there (and it's not interstates) and Fla. St. is even further and Miami is several hours away.

If I was going to live in FL it would be either Tallahassee (which is actually a pretty nice area), Tampa (Clearwater), or Ft. Myers (but that's still a bit too small and the avg. age is rather high...but it's a nice area.)

Not taking into account my disgust for FSU, Tallahassee came across as a really crappy town IMO... I had some friends who lived there and it just seemed old and dirty everytime i visited.

Well, it's the state capital and there are two colleges there. There are some hills, trees, not too terribly far from the Gulf. Seemed nice the few days I was there. There was a pretty good cajun-style restaurant in the downtown area (not far from the Sheriff Dept. IT offices.)

If you want to go into the sciences then come to UF. Gainesville is nice as long as you avoid the commercial areas.

Hmm Well I"ll to Flagler County High for my Senior year. I plan to go into biology so by UF do you mean UNF? University of North Florida. I didn't know there was a University of just Florida

hurricane alley. kiss the house goodbye in 2 years. (cat 4+ storms every 2 years, on avg).

oh, how long ago was the house built? if it was last year or later, it might survive w/the new revamped hurricane resistant build codes.

the last revision of the building codes was 10 years ago.

if it was built b4 2004, then kiss the house goodbye
