Parents bought a Benz.

A 1993 Mercedes Benz 300D. I have no idea why he did that, he only told me for the gas economy. Thread looking for a good "sporty" car. I shake my head, he could of spent the extra couple k and got a Turbo Diesel Beetle or Jetta.

Anyways, I can't change that they bought this car. Anyone know problems with it? Comments?

that engine is bullet proof.. its a very well built car.. trust me.. I know ppl with teh 300D engine that has over 200K and still pulls.

I dunno, a friend of mine's parents just bought a '93 300E and it's in amazing shape. It's really better put-together than the other cars you list and it'll probably be more reliable in the long run.

Personal preference. I wouldn't take a beetle over a benz either.
you should get the convertible beetle, so you can hear the people laughing at you

IMO, I think the 1993 Mercedes my parents got is HORRENDOUS, worse than the Beetle.

As an old diesel mechanic I will say, good car, for an old fart. I like the 2door myself.
It was the 300SD, I think. I had a 240D for 2years, it got me to work, slowly.
Every mechanic and crane operator had a diesel because we would fill the tanks from the equipment we ran🙂

Just have pop do the regular service including a trans service. Be sure and change all fuel filters, sometimes a large auxiliary primary fuel filter is added to those cars, do not
neglect it. Follow the procedures to the letter when doing a f/f change, as losing the prime can make a restart difficult.

If the car has set undriven for 2 years, shock the fuel system with an anti-fungal additive.
Once fungus starts growing in the fuel system the cost to clean it out is prohibitive.

I'd rather they laugh at me then people question my sexuality. 😉😀

We had a 1985 300SD Turbodiesel. It was a wonderful car--never had any major mechanical problems. I think the worst stuff we got was replacing the AC/Heat unit and the power antenna (it wouldn't go all the way up). Overall it was a VERY smooth/comfortable ride; handling was excellent, even on a car of that size (though acceleration was lacking).
