In the first deal of its kind, Seagate and Paramount have teamed up to offer external hard drives with movies preloaded on them.

With the decline of DVD sales, Hollywood continues to find ways to cash in on digital and streaming movie technology. Recent deals with both Netflix and Blockbuster, plus new rumors of Redbox considering a move to streaming videos all point to Hollywood movie houses being willing to think outside the box; and outside its industry.

Hard drive manufacturer Seagate will begin to offer certain versions of their external hard drives preloaded with movies from Paramount; the deal is the first of its kind. Users will be able to connect the device and have access to several movies immediately. For a price of course.

Reuters is reporting that the new Seagate FreeAgent Go 500GB external hard drive will now feature 21 preloaded movies- 2009’s Star Trek will be complimentary, while the rest can be unlocked for $9.99-$14.99.

The FreeAgent 500GB currently sells for $99.99, but no word on if this will increase the price of the unit. Also unknown is how much of the hard drive will be taken up by these movies; a video file large enough to hold a movie can run anywhere from 700MB to 9GBs depending on the quality of the video. The hard drive will come formatted for Windows only. Apple users can still take full advantage of the device, but would need to reformat and delete the content before being able to use the hard drive.

Sounds like a stupid gimmick that I don't care to take advantage of. I'll still buy WD.

This might entice some other people, though.

I think we know where this is going...
How long until one of the drive manufacturers draws up a contract with a porn distributor?

Edit....:(
Damn, too late.

So I buy an external HD because I need storage space and now I have to delete PPV movies off of it because Seagate sucks so much they have to resort to gimmicks to try and sell their junk? I'm not buying Seagate again for any reason after getting stung with their 1 TB drives failing.
