Parallels 2.5 doesn't seem to play nice with Leopard

I've neglected upgrading to Parallels 3.0 due to the IMO high upgrade cost ($50)

Unfortunately though, it seems even the recent leopard compatible version for 2.5 doesn't work all too well, from slow responsiveness to kernel panics, its been a pain.

Anyone else experience the same?

Try VMWare Fusion.

To my knowledge, parallels 2.5 isn't supported in Leopard. You will have to upgrade to 3.0 or get a copy of vmware fusion.

I have had the same experiences as you described.

I decided to go with VMWare fusion because it seems more stable, it is developed by a well-established company, and because it is less expensive.

That's what they say, but I cannot get it to work well enough to consider it stable.

Well, they might say it is supported, but the fact that everyone I have ever seen that tries to use 2.5 in Leopard is met with issues means (to me) that I don't think they take that version seriously.

Improved compatibility is a cop out term for "it's buggy, get 3.0" heh.

I've even had some issues with 3.0, so I switched to VMware. I resisted switching initially because I really liked Parallels, but VMware is a better and more stable product. I would highly recommend it :thumbsup:

As much as I would love to try out 2.0, I can't afford to lose my Windows install.

Awesome news is that it says "all 1.x users will receive a FREE upgrade to 2.0". Talk about great! I feel like I should pay them something though, since their product is so wonderful.

Thanks guys, VMWare made a huge difference. Both my XP and Vista installs can idle at around 8-10% cpu, instead of 100%. They also seem to be a ton snappier. Thanks!

Yea, I agree. It's just nice to know since the Parallels team decided to charge an upgrade fee for every full version release.

I broke down and installed it because of the dual monitor support and I'm loving it. It's even faster while I'm working, yay!

Hrmph, while VMWare seems to be better for the most part, i'm still having a weird issue where VMware like to stay around 100% cpu when Vista is loaded. I have indexing turned off in Vista and according to task manager, nothing out of the ordinary is running.... Any ideas why the CPU usage in VMWare seems to be so high?

Vista, in my experience, is a hog with resources when it's the only OS running. I haven't had good success with it in a VM. However, I didn't run into that issue when I previously had it installed. Are you running 32 or 64 bit? You could also give the new 2.0 Beta a shot, as this sped up my XP install pretty well, so I'm sure there are other enhancements for Vista, etc...
