Parallel connection-newbie needs help

I would like to learn is there any way to connect a P4 desktop (Win98) to a P3 Laptop (Win XP) using the parallel cable?. Is there a need to get some application running together in both machine? How about the settings. I been to some website stating that I need a Laplink 5 to run it. Please advise.
