Paper jam from hell

I just got done completely ripping apart a Brother HL-1440 because i could find the source of an error light i was receiving. Well, after tearing the whole thing apart i gandered inside the toner only to notice a piece of paper about 1/2" square. Well, i guess i know how to tear apart a Brother HL-1440 now. 😛
 
Ah if you bought that machine from Staples, you shoulda gotten their Extended Service Protection. Basically you buy the warranty, call up the # in the pamphlet and tell them you got a paperjam from hell. They'll send a Staples gift card for $200 or whatever you paid for that machine so you can buy a new machine or anything else in any Staples store. The best part is, you can keep your current machine even if it's broken or not. 🙂

Yeah but according to my boss (LOL)...he says it's not really abusing the system because:

a) Your actual money is already with Staples
b) It keeps you coming back to the store

I'm just a Sales Associate. That's the pitch line that I have to use to sell warranties to keep my job. I actually believe in their ESP services cuz basically I can buy a printer now, and 2 years down the road...get another printer and end up only paying $20 for it ($20 = estimated price of the warranty that you pay now).

Actually i got this from OfficeDepot probably about a year ago on a HotDeals thread. $150.00. Been a GREAT laser for $150! I've only had this one jam that caused a headache. Otherwise, for $150.00 i reallly can't complain.

Yeah we still sell em at Staples. It's got alot of stickers on it saying it's won a buncha prizes. The main one coming from C|Net. I've heard good reviews on it.

Can you buy the ESP say 5 months after you purchased the printer?

 
Unfortunately no. If I remember correctly, you can only buy it 14 days after you buy the printer (basically the same amount of times allowed on returns). Honestly, I wonder why so many people don't abuse this system. The only drawbacks to this that i see is...

a) You lose track of your receipt and/or pamphlet that has your ESP info on it.
b) You forget that you even bought the damn thing in the long run.
c) It makes the amount you pay initially alot less attractive.

The funny thing is, people don't understand that warranties these days only cover manufacturer defects (hence the term limited warranty). Staples' warranty fully 100% covers anything the limited manu. warranty doesn't.

All you gotta do (at my store at least) is either...bring the damn machine in and we'll call the # for you. Or you call the # yourself. If you call the # yourself, you can keep the machine. If you bring the machine in, we keep it...and send it back to the manuf. so they melt it, recycle it and make new stuff with it. 😛 Fellow co-workers refer to the program as a trade-in program since if you just call the # yourself, you can just make up a story about paperjam and they'll OK it. You end up spending like $30 on a printer every 2 years or so.

Might I add that printers don't last that long these days anyways. Co-workers have told me they last up to 3 years. Something about how electronics switched from aluminum to copper circuitry. Aluminum circuitry lasted forever while Copper Circuitry lasts 2-3 years in many cases.
 
does the staples extended warranty take effect ONLY after the manufacture's warranty runs out?
Let's say my printer jams catastrophically the day I buy it, can I use the Staples warranty then? Or must I go through the manufacturer since it's still under that warranty too? It'd be simpler just to get money back from staples than deal with the manuf.

If you are still under manuf. warranty, you would call for example, HP, and tell them what's wrong. They will probably either charge you a great deal of money to ship it and labor costs. Some companies even deny you the chance to fix it. Remember, limited warranties only cover manufacturer defects. So after you call up the HP and get shut down, call the # in the Staples pamphlet, tell them what's wrong (make up the reason why if you want). You'll get to keep your printer and Staples will send you a cash card for whatever you paid within 3-5 business days. You can then spend the cash card on anything you want in any Staples store.

The only thing that I don't understand about this is...what if EVERYONE in the world were to do this. So every couple years, people would only spend $20 on printers. How would they make money? Wouldn't Staples lose money and fvck themselves in the future? Kinda like instant gratification (make the extra $20 or so off of each customer who buys a piece of electronics)...but stop allowing the "trade-in" thing in the future. Granted, Staples can still live off of selling furniture and office supplies...

Oh and if you absolutely want your machine to be legitimately fixed, Staples can do that for you. I'm not too sure on how this works though...since normal people would just go out and buy a better machine instead of trying to get their broken thing fixed.
 
We had a brother multifunction machine jam like that once, it actually uised the same fuser mechanism as the 1440. You aren't gonna get that puppy out without the jaws of life. I ended up buying it off work, ripped the fuser out, but the way it's built it's designed to NOT be opened, and instead replace the whole piece. I wish you luck, andlook forward to updates, but don't kill yourself fixing it 😛
