I haven't heard about this game myself, but it comes out on the 14th. It looks interesting, but will it live up to AC lore?

Added bonus a hour plus long pod cast with Brian Reynolds who talks about Alpha Centauri among other things.

well it doesnt look bad... although it looks too CIV 5ish to me (and i didnt particularly like CIV 5)

but i love SCI FI more than i love Medieval themed games, so lets see how this one ends up being

I have to study up on this (I'm probably the biggest AC fan you'll ever find).

Hopefully they included a dynamic economy (I haven't read the material yet).

I'm sure all the mechanics are changed up if it's indeed based of of CIV V. At least we should hope so 🙂

Honestly if it's good I wouldn't care all that much. Alpha Centauri of old was essentially Civilization: In Space.

True enough, but Civilization 5 was an abortion of a game whose primary purpose was simply to sell DLC. Not a good base to go from.

Interesting . . . but the screen shots . . . is this an independent game or a highly detailed Civ5 mod?

There's not much info on it, but I've read the preview links on their site I don't see a mention of it being a mod or built on CIV5.

In some of the screen shots the game has a square map and in others hex.

The most telling thing saying it's not is it's a OpenGL game whereas CIV V is Direct X, right?

Kinda weird, it's been in development for 2 years yet there's like 19 posts on their forums.

looks quite interesting. going through the video, it started as squares and they moved it to hexes.

This looks interesting. I was not even aware it was being done. Really love these type of games. I will contact the devs and make them share a story or two!

Just an update guys, we have received a code for the game preview and download. We are in touch with the developers, and should have first hand experience in the days to come. The clients are being downloaded as i write this.

Cheers!

Okay, played two games in a row, got crushed like i never played a strategy game. The game is terrific, oozes with atmosphere.

Edit: The review is up on the website if you care to check it out, and i hope ill see you in game.

Is the music/sound anything like the original?

Nice review! Was the whole game hexed based? I remember seeing mixed screen shots between squares and hex. Did you review the final release?

Well, i wanted you to experience the soundtrack without giving it away. I cant really claim it is like the original, but it is really fitting.

Yes yes, in the dev video that is linked in the article you see how they progressed towards hex grid.
I reviewed the game couple days before its launch, so unless any kind of major patches happens tomorrow i would guess it is the full experience.
But since it is launch day tomorrow, i would not be surprised to see a major patch. Not that the game needs it in my opinion.
Thanks for the feedback!

Have to say between then and the RPS preview from a few months ago, I'll definitely be watching the reviews. Might get myself an early birthday present...

So this just came out. Does anyone have any opinions of this game? It looks to be built on Civ 5 engine, but I don't see any Civ 5 gameplay elements that people usually complain about. In fact, it looks very Alpha Centauri-ish overall. The only red flag I can see is the semi-random tech tree. While that would alter how things play out a bit each time, I think it kind of prevents you from pursuing a grand strategy as clearly. Also, AC had one of the best most complicated and awesome tech trees ever.
