Panda Problems

Hey fellas, I recently switched to Panda Antivirus Plaltinum 7.05.03 from AVG and i've been having this weird problem. Everytime I boot up into Windows XP pro SP2, my system slows down to a crawl for a couple of minutes. I checked TASK MANAGER, and and something called 'AVENGINE.EXE' was taking up a MASSIVE amount of CPU resources. After a while this automatically goes away, but I got impatient and ended it. Everything went back to normal, and perminent protection as well as email protection were still enabled.

I was wondering if anyone here knew what AVENGINE.EXE was, and if it's normal for it to hog my CPU at boot up for minutes. BTW, it came bundled with a firewall, but I disabled it because i'm using ZONE ALARM. Is that alright or should I switch to the inbuilt firewall? Oh and even though I disabled it, I notice something called 'PAVPROXY.EXE' running in the background, because of it's name, i'm assuming that has something to do with the firewall which I have disabled? Does it have to be running?

Thanks a lot guys.

Oh and another thing. At first, the updates worked, but now everytime I try to update the virus definitions, i get an error saying :

"Could not update the antivirus correctly.

Cause of error: File operations

Error preparing update files. Please try again later."

Panda Titanium does not do this on WinXP Sp2. I doubt that platinum should either.

I have a problem with PAnda AV also.

For some reason my file protection no longer works. When I try to enable it, I Get an error. Can not load file protection module or something.

THat happened to me too, but reconfiguring it and rebooting fixed it for me. Or try checking your services (start/run/services.msc) and look for Panda Antivirus Service and check to see if it's started.

i also have problems with titanium, but i found norton to be even more buggy (couldn't enable active file protection) so i guess i'll just put up with it.

OKay, I think I figured it out. I noticed that VSMON.EXE was also taking up resources, though not as much as AVENGINE.EXE, at startup. So I did a clean boot, uninstalled Panda and reinstalled it. I configured the built in firewall for Panda, then disabled it. I added all the panda exe's to ZONE ALARM so it wouldn't restrict it, did another boot, and tried updating panda. It worked. So far everything seems to be running fine again. I guess it was some weird conflict with ZA, i'm not fully sure. Well, lets see how long it lasts. If the problem comes back, i'll post here again. Thanks for all your replies fellas!

Nevermind guys, It wasn't realted to ZA at all. After a few more boots I noticed that it was fine at startup(atleast got that fixed) but AVENGINE freezes if I open OPERA(the first time i think). And thats my main browser. IS there any known fix to this? If not i guess i'm going to have to switch antiviruses =(

I have Panda Platinum 7.0 with XP SP2 and no problems. I am using the Panda Firewall and don't have Zone Alarm. I use the Opera broswer occasionally, but not as my default, so I don't know if that is your issue. Panda seems to be a fine A/V program that uses less resources than Norton IMO.

I`m using Opera 7.54 as my default browser with Panda Titanium 2004,no problems to report ,all rock stable, btw using Kerio Personal firewall 4 as well, only thing I can think of is make sure you disable the XP SP2 firewall and try having both your AV and firewall set in "Security Centre icon"(SP2 one in Control panel) to " not monitored ".

Why do you keep installing the firewall that comes with Panda Antivirus Plaltinum 7.05.03 when you are running Zone Alarm? When you install Plaltinum one of the screens ask you if you wish to install the firewall protection. Just remove the checkmark from the box in that window and keep going with the installation. You have no need for having all that stuff loading up at startup.

Yeah but thats the thing. Initially I didn't install the firewall and things messed up. When I did, configured it, and disabled it later though, my system stopped freezing at startup. But anyway, I have good news. I installed the 5.1 update to ZA and reinstalled everything again. And it seems to be working good. Even opera hasn't shown any conflicts with it this time around. I hope it doesn't mess up again though. It's a weird program, but it scans well and is pretty light compared to some other AVs. So I guess i'm going to stick with Panda until it messes up again. =)

I'm having pretty much the same problem. I had no AV nor firewall installed. Then for no reason, my system hangs. Can't do anything. After I install Panda Platinum 7, that is.

Kinda sucks, I really wanna give Panda a shot, but I'll be damned if I have to spend hours trying to figure out the problem. Norton was working perfectly fine before.

Oh, on a second note, I just installed XP SP2, and the Windows UI won't load. Been a sh*tty day.

Norton Ghost is your friend.
