Evidentially you are supposed to refrigerate maple syrup after opening it or it will go rancid

why would anyone think they could leave it out? is that something people do with fake syrup?

i've only ever used real syrup since my family has made been making it for 100+ years

so it's usually cheap unless it was a bad year

Still got a half bottle or so of Mrs. Butterworths gallon bottle, non-maple, from a couple years ago. Definitely has never been put in a refrigerator. Probably won't be eaten for another 10 years or ever given my oral health. Need to check, but it wasn't moldy or anything when I ate pancakes with some frequency. The potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, and sodium hexametaphosphate might have done their magic.

That Krusteaz brand batter sold by Wally's Club sure had something tasty about it. First taste was from a scavenged bag. Then we bought a full 10 pound bag.

Log Cabin: $2.99
Real Maple Syrup: $16.99

Most people around here use fake syrup.

Big Lots.

Better place. Less evil.
I shouldn’t eat pancakes or anything starchy now. I want to say can’t but I’ve binged on sweets over the last six months and especially the last two week. The only tempting food at Wally World is their fried chicken(bread crumbs make a colossal mess in the teeth) and the loss leader on milk(was $1.49 a gallon, now 2.09, but I have moved on to lactose free. There is slight tenderness and pain in my gum area so I know the sugar did it. Another abscess and I will flip. I’m going to be bailed out by a dentist today with a cleaning(I am low income so two regular cleanings a year). Nor do I have to the time to spend mixing batter even if I wasn’t screwed up in mouth.

Physical labor has been demanded of me and I have some COVID drag, so I had to cave against my intended standards and satisfy the carb fix via cakes, eclairs etc. Eating bacon, chicken, ground beef all the time and finding green vegetables gets old quick since I am not much of a meat lover and plain greens are also plain.

A. Get this ( or similar).

113300040

B. Let the 'family' make their own.

C. Tell the others your place is not a farking restaurant. They can make their own at their own home.

D. Fritzo is nutzo.
A) I spent all those years training and cooking high-end foods in professional settings. I can make that stuff in 3 minutes with stuff in the cabinet (and 'just add water' means they're using powdered eggs and milk...sad)
B) See "A". My daughter has some promise, but everyone else in my family would burn water.
C) Since they see me whip up meals and snacks in 20 minutes, they do think it's a restaurant. Common occurance with wife:
Me: What do you want for dinner?
Wife: I'm not hungry, I'm just going to snack on something.
Me: Makes myself something quickly
Wife: What did you make?
Me: I just used up those brussels sprouts and a couple of old vegetables in the fridge and pan seared that last piece of salmon we had in the freezer:

Wife: OOO THAT LOOKS GOOD! CAN I HAVE A BITE?

*several bites later I'm looking for something else to eat...*

D) Very very possible.

Man, get yourself a WaterPik and use it before bed every night (you'll find a crazy amount of food comes out that tooth brushes don't reach). You will probably see blood the first several times you use it: that's bacteria pockets you're blasting away.

Also swish with Listerine after brushing your teeth in the morning and at night...it has to be real Listerine too. They have a proprietary formula that nobody else is allowed to copy. The alcohol in that stuff makes your gums contract, allowing bacteria below the gum line to get cleaned out.

Guarantee your mouth issues will get better if you start that regimen. It's not the sweets that's causing your mouth issues, it's the food getting stuck in your teeth and not getting removed.

Listerine is (original nasty tasting formula only ... mint can leave oil-residue) "suitable for the sterilization of surgical instruments".

Strong stuff! :D (I use it to gargle AND brush 2-3 times a week)

I use the showerhead as a water pik (but I shower after eating before work).

You should use mouthwash before brushing, as brushing is actually about rubbing toothpaste into the tiny crevices in your teeth, forming a protective layer to prevent bacteria and other shit from getting in there. You should brush before you eat, and then rinse your mouth with water after you eat. Chewing sugarfree gum helps as well (and helps stimulate saliva production and your saliva naturally deal with bacteria).

No, the alcohol in Listerine is actually working against that as it dries your mouth out which helps the bacteria grow. Your saliva actually is a natural deterrent to bacteria. And STFU about them having some secret formula. They literally have to put the active ingredient on the damn bottle (https://www.drugs.com/otc/113880/listerine-antiseptic.html). And guess what, its not alcohol. That's just there for the people that don't know alcohol is bad for mouth health but have associated the burn from it as such. Also, alcohol consumption is tied to about ~30% increase in mouth and throat cancers.

And uh, having the gums contract is actually very bad for your mouth health, as it exposes more of your teeth to things that cause its decay. Which, frankly a rinse of Listerine isn't doing that, although multiple daily of it might cause your gums to recede which wouldn't be a good thing (and would be happening because the alcohol is drying your gums out, not keeping them healthy). That's how you get gingivitis.

Already did in May, when the abscess from hell in early April got me all worked up and woken up. Wouldn’t be able to do the aforementioned binges without it. As an aside, Corn is the one of the worst in getting between the teeth and Waterpik is amazing at blasting the stuff out

Now the bleeding is gone but some areas have become sensitive again. I was able to strictly hold to the dietary restrictions for about 2 months and the teeth and mouth felt dentist fresh. But after the first couple intermittent binges, a little regression in terms of sensitivity has reoccurred in some points. I also can feel the lingering residue of sweets. I double brush with both a baking soda brushing and a regular toothpaste brushing.

It’s the jolt from glucose and sucrose that is the true addicting part. I should eat fruit over starchy desserts but it is not the taste, but the jolt that is lacking when eating fruit. I basically already compromised and tried to use lactose free milk, with a nice Waterpik bath immediately afterwards, as the sole allowance of something sweet but it wasn’t enough.

Also, vegetables and meat stuck between teeth do not form as favorable an environment as starchy food stuck between the teeth. I have begun considering eating cheddar as well.

All true and why I don't use it every day ... most important point to take away is that your mouth is supposed to have bacteria in it and Listerene is like the ultimate broad-spectrum antibiotic in that it kills em' all and lets God sort em' out lol.

Having said all that however, Listerene WILL eliminate minor mouth and gum infections/potential infections before they spread and in addition I've found using it to gargle when sick (alternating with warm salty water) cuts way back on sore throat-symptoms.

Also I would hazard a guess that killing 99% of anything alive in your mouth would have to cut down on transmission of pretty much anything living in (or just hanging out) in your mouth short-term including virus's and nasty germs/bacteria.

I've had a jug of Costco bought 100% maple syrup in the fridge for going on 10 years now.

Nice work though, and nice story OP.

Now, you would have had better luck with honey. That stuff reputedly never spoils... ever! It does solidify. When it does that I MWave it and it becomes liquified again.

I had a sealed bottle start growing fur once. I poured off the mold and decanted it into a different bottle. Didn't lose too much.
I reached for a bottle of strawberry jam I made a couple months ago that was sitting in the fridge a couple days ago and spotted some fungus growth just starting. I scooped it out (2-3 spots), placed the uncovered jar in the MWave for ~40 seconds, spotted it frothing and lunged for the MWave door, removed, scooped out my portion and put on a new sterilized top to the jar and back it went in the fridge. My reasoning is that any fungus or spores were thereby killed.

Fungus doesn't scare me, but I try not to eat it. It invades some things more than others. My jar of DIY plum jam was fine. For some reason the fungi never give that stuff a 2nd look. I keep all my opened jam jars in the fridge. Unopened, the seem to keep forever (I can them at almost boiling temp, which kills fungus spores).

Dude.... if you are getting "abscess's from hell" all I can say is that unless you are immune-compromised in some way you are CLEARLY doing dental-care COMPLETELY wrong.

Start with FLOSSING DAILY for a few weeks. ;)

Why We Floss: The Frontline of Oral Health

Take this problem seriously per Harvard Medical school!

Gum disease and the connection to heart disease
Yeah, dental health is a big deal. Floss daily, brush too. In fact 2x/day is good idea. If you have gum issues you may need to do some other stuff (dental pick... I do). See a good dentist periodically if at all possible. At least once a year, I figure, 2x/year better!

Add back a small amount of water when doing this and it won't re-solidify nearly as quickly.

I actually floss 3-4 times a week depending on what I eat (on the advice of my dentist) but it def is key to keeping your teeth as well as other aspects of good health.
