A dead pixel on a television? a CRT television? I've never heard of that.

ehh, i'm not sure what it is exactly, it looks exactly how a dead pixel on a monitor would look like. it's wierd though, it only appears when it's on a blue screen. i can't see it on any other color background. i guess it's not a problem, if it is, i still have the one year warrenty :)

I was playing a DVD on this set this weekend and noticed what other had complained about -- the letterbox is uneven and, as a result, the black band on the bottom is larger on the right side of the screen and gradually gets smaller as you look left. The difference is very small, but still annoying on what is supposed to be a high-end set. Any idea if this can be corrected by accessing a service menu? Will Panasonic send a service man to my house to adjust it?

what sort of hook ups are you leterbox haters using?

Hooked up my aging Panasonic A110 or whatever with component cables (like the way TV seems to know it is a component hookup) and watched about ten minutes of Jet Li's "The one" in side screen and everything looked "picture perfect"

Have you tried dorking with the geomagnetic settings? Maybe it's due to your lattitude and not the tv's attitude?

huh? I like letterboxed video -- its the TV that's a problem. I don't know how the hook-up would matter, but I am using an s-video and component sound cables from my Toshiba DVD player. The cable signal goes through a box into the TV using a composite connection. As far as the geomagnetic settings, I thought that only effected color distortion.

The primary purpose of it is to separate the luminance (Y) from the chrominance (c). The S-video (aka Y/C) cable already does this and bypasses the comb filter on your set. The separation will either occur in the set, or in the video unit (say DVD player). Component is a whole nother issue. :)
That's true, a high-quality comb filter can definitely make a difference. Also, 36" is still (relatively) small enough that any improvement the S-Video cable offers might not be noticeable. I've read on some of the HT forums that you can certainly tell the difference on anything bigger than 36".
So it seems people can tell a difference between the different types of wires. Now what about different brands? Should I bother getting some super-duper HQ components? Or just some cheapos?

Thanks for this thread... I wish my income tax return was back a week sooner, but it's given me a little insight towards what tv to purchase... I like the flatscreen, but hesitate to pay the premium for the Sony Wega... this is a great deal, but too late for me! Maybe though, I can get the guy at Rex to match the price if they carry these... or maybe my friend will actually come through and pick up a tv for me at cost like he promised a few months ago.

Bump

Very interested to hear how things worked out for the people with leterbox or other problems?

Did you just return the TV, exchange it for a new one, have a repairman fix it, OR did you figure out some "setting" to fix the problem?

Thanks!!!!!!!!

The problem is not big enough for me to try and lug this monster back to the store. I will keep bugging Panasonic and see if they can send someone out to adjust it. It really is not that noticable and i doubt anyone but me would see it. Honestly, I probably would not have noticed it at all unless I had read about the problem on the interent. I suppose sometime too much information is a bad thing.

I think it depends on both the video source being used, and the set it is connected to. I have a reasonably sizable collection of video-game consoles and other video sources, and connected to my (smaller) NEC 20" set, these is a noticable difference in the quality between the S-video and the Composite. I can also notice the difference, in both the video-in and tv-out ports on my computer. So I would say that the difference is definately noticeable, on a much smaller tube than a 36". Granted, I am somewhat of a perfectionist, and I can't stop tweaking and tuning my systems until they are "perfect", so I might notice more things than the average person who just watches cable tv or DVD movies. (Also, video-games and computer output on a television display tend to have content with a lot more contrasting edges than most "normal" recorded video content.)

Anyone know if this deal is still on?

It is YMMV, or available in most/all Circuit City stores (if available at all)?

Regarding the letterbox un-eveness, I did get it almost perfect by adjusting the geomagnetic
adjustment under 'settings' - give it a try.
Then get the Avia dvd and really tune up the rest of the settings.

Playing with the geomagnetic settings work! the letterbox bands are now straight. Thanks alot.

I looking in the manual and, interestingly, it says this setting is for color correction on certain models and tilt on others. Worked for me though as a tilt adjustment even though its supposed to be color correction for my particular model. I have not checked to see if the color is off, however. I guess I can adjust that elsewhere.

Thanks again.
