Panasonic RV-31 owners...here's how to get SVCD working with your player.

Well I figured this out the other day so I thought i'd post it since I know at least a few people here have rv31's. The player only support VCD (MPEG1) and (undocumented) XVCD.

Little do you know it can also play SVCD (MPEG2) even though it's not spec'd to do so. All you have to do is trick it into thinking it's a VCD and it plays it for some strange reason. You need two pieces of software to do this:

TMPGEnc
Nero Burning Rom

Open up TMPGEnc, and click File --> MPEG Tools. Go to the Multiplex tab. Add your SVCD (MPEG) file then it should list the video and audio tracks. Type in your output file, and change the pulldown menu at the top to "MPEG-1 Video-CD". Then click the Run button...it takes a couple minutes to multiplex the file depending on the size of it.

Open up Nero, create a new Video CD (not Super Video CD). Uncheck the "Create Standard Compliant CD" checkbox, then burn it as you would a normal VCD.

This method probably also works with other Panasonic players (especially 2001 models) that only support VCD, and it may even work with other brands. Worth a try anyway....it plays flawlessly. The player has the capabilities but they don't support it. 😕

WOW! I didn't even know SVCD's existed. (that's what I get for not scrolling down another line in Nero 🙂 ) I recently discovered VCD's (and now SVCD's) and how they can be played in DVD players (unlike Laser Disc players). Now I'm thinking about getting a DVD player so I can burn SVCD's and play them on it (BTW, my birthday is coming up 😉 ).

I just tried a SVCD in my parents Samsung VCR/DVD combo unit and it played it perfectly. I just encoded it with the program you mentioned and burned it as a SVCD with Nero.

🙂🙂🙂😀

will this work on an rv-30?

by the way...the manual for my rv-30 says it wont play cdrw's and only cdr's, it turns out it only plays cdrws and not cdrs...is there a way to get around this? i want to burn some mp3s to a cd and play em in my home theater system, but cdrw's are kinda expensive in bulk

I don't know, why don't you try it?

As for cd-r's, maybe try some different brands. What brand are you using now?

i doubt it.. doesnt it have to do with the lenses or something? i wouldnt mind the cdrw part, but the only cdrw media i have is 4x from compussr.. o well.. that's what i got a mintek from bestbuy.. plays vcds, cdrs great..

<< aren't SVCD's encoded in the MPEG1 format? why would anyone want to use MPEG2 on a CDR? >>

SVCD = MPEG2!

What's wrong with MPEG2 on a CD-R? You can fit about 45mins of near-dvd quality mpeg2 on a 80min cd-r.
