I did not get the model #. But as a longtime plasma owner, this is a fantastic TV at a fantastic price. The Sams in Gaithersburg, MD had about 10-12 in stock.

is this a YMMV, or is it that price at all the Sam's? I didn't see the box on their website.

I think amheck was talking about the Panasonic.

On their website they list a 50" Panasonic rear projection LCD (Item #413510
) for $2252.

I am guessing this is it because if it really is plasma it is the hottest deal I have ever seen and I may have to go on a road trip to MD!

Looks to be projection not plasma.

From Samsclub.com:
PANASONIC
50"PROJECTION LCD HDTV MONITOR
Item: 413510
Price: $2,252.88

I guess I was talking about both. I doubt you can buy a Panny 50" HD Plasma nor a 42" Sony Plasma for $2000-$2200.

Sam's does not sell Panasonic plasma sets at any location. This is from the electronics buyer at Wal-Mart in Bentonville home office. Sorry

LOL

Just goes to show how much electronics buyers know. Sam's in Tallahassee carries Panasonic 42" TH-42PA25 for $1978.77.

My store didn't have any Panasonic 50" plasma, only Akai ($2700), Philips ($4500) and Sony ($6000).

Like others said, you're full of it. I was at Sams this week and yes, they do sell Panasonic plasmas. Ooooh I work for Walmart, I know all.

You sure about that? That price sounds about right for the LCD rear projection.

It's likely this EDTV plama from Sony that isekii is talking about. If you don't look at the specs closely, it is easy to get the HD and ED plasmas mixed up (especially since a lot of stores run their HDTVs off of SD feeds or DVD loops, in which case the HDTVs don't have a chance to really shine and look about the same quality as the ED models).

If Sams or anyone trustworthy had the top rated Sony KE-42M1 ED plasma for $2,000 that would be killer. BJ's has an older model Sony 42 inch plasma HD for $3,500.

Top rated Sony 50XS955 plasma is widely available for $5,000.

This is what I saw.

i agree with kremiar, EDTVs are not a waste of money. how many HD sources do you have access to? not too many, i'm sure. i'll bet the SD sources outmatch the HD sources by about 5 to 1. and EDTVs handle SD sources better than HDTVs, because the vertical resolution is 1:1. also, EDTV black levels are usually better. there's a reason that the Panasonic 42" EDTV was the CNET editor's choice last year (and this year i believe).

check out http://www.cnet.com/4520-7874_1-5137915-1.html?tag=nav for more detail (sorry my html sucks)

i'm presonally going to get the panasonic 42" EDTV, because i can get a discount through my employer and get it for $1875.

LOL. Uh, no.

To me, if I spend $1500+ on a television, I expect it to handle HD resolutions. I want to have a TV that will last me at least 10 years. If HD is the future, why would I invest a substantial amount of money in a TV that is already obselete?

I understand the argument that there are few HD channels available today, but in that case, I would rather save my money and buy a less expensive SD television today, then invest in a HD model down the road.

you'd better go over $3k if you want plasma HD. you can always get one of the projection technologies for a lot cheaper, but why bother.

Why bother? DLP RPTVs for example have a bigger screen, no burn in issues, replaceable bulbs (once your plasma has faded, thats it) and are cheaper. They also have an argueably better picture than plasma. Unless hanging a TV on the wall is important to you (and how i hate it when people hang them so high you have to look up to see them) the other technologies are IMHO a better choice.

And I got my 42" Plasam HDTV for $2000...HDTV's are always better than EDTV's. I have about 10 HDTV channels right now btw, maybe more actually.
