Palm Vx or Palm IIIC or other recommendations?

I really like the specs on the Vx due to it's small size. However, the thought of color (although only 256 colors) is very appealing. I haven't had much experience using the Palm OS before but I mainly just want to use it to organize myself. Maybe add a few games, view some pictures, and use AvantGO.

I have thought about the Pocket PC (primarily IPAQ) and to use it's advanced features, it requires an expansion slot and doesn't make it very portable. They can also be very expensive.

I also want to know if any of you have used either the Vx or IIIC and whether the color of the IIIC is worth sacrificing the slim form factor of the Vx.

I have a Cassio E-15 using windows CE 2.11 but it's really outdated and kinda bulky. I want to replace it with a newer unit.

Are you working on a budget that you are considering only older models? The m505 is the newest color Palm. And the Cony Clie 610c version is supposed to be cream of the crop (there may be a 615c in Feb. though).

Keep in mind that Palm is appealing a lawsuit from Xerox which puts the whole platform in jeopardy.

I had a Palm IIIc as my first PDA. I liked it. I knew someone that had a Vx, the screen is rather decent on it and I envied the form factor, but I still thought that color was better than a slim form factor. I later upgraded to a Casio Casiopea E-125, and later on to my current PDA, Compaq iPaq h3635.

How much are you looking to spend for that IIIc? You can pickup one of those older (but still nice) HP Jornada Pocket PCs for around $150 from Staples w/coupon.

I've got a Palm IIIc. I love the PalmOS (vs. PocketPC). The color is not really a big deal, as not too many apps really take use of it. If you are going to use it out side, you won't want to get the IIIc. Its brightness doesn't help, and its becomes very hard to see. Indoors however it is VERY bright.

I do like the bright screen, but the thinf is kind of big. My brother has a Clie' and it weighs like half as much and is slimmer too. My boss had a V and replaced it with a m500, he too picked grayscale over color.

oh, another word about size/weight: I wish my IIIc was smaller and lighter. The iPAQ's are about the same size and weight. I would never buy something that size again...

The iPaq is indeed slimmer than the IIIc. The IIIc is basicly a rectangular box, where the iPaq is very rounded and curved. It feels alot lighter than the IIIc in my pocket.

Let me warn you that a 256 (8 bit) color display will cause pictures to look terrible. 12 bit color is viewable, but with visible banding. 16 bit is great for casual viewing.

The HP PPCs don't require expansion sleeves. For the Ipaq you only need the expansion sleeve if you want to add more hardware, and based on the needs you listed, you probably won't need the sleeve. I don't use mine much anymore. If you decide on an ipaq, get either a 3670, 3700 series or 3800 series. All the earlier models tend to have unresolved QC issues that will probably need repairs.

If you buy an m505, you don't have to make any compromises. Not to mention it's more stylish than either. 😀

I wouldn't recommend the IIIc. I'd get the Vx or the m500 or m505.
The IIIc screen is ok indoors and terrible outdoors. The m505 actually uses the same screen one of the iPaqs use, but I don't remember which model. The screen is pretty decent. But the Sony model (i forget which one) is a little better.

hmm, one of the guys at work has a new iPaq, I'll do a recompare. It seems the same size...

Get the IIIc! I have a Palm IIIc and I absolutely love it. My friend has a Vx and the screen is horrible. I have no complaints about the IIIc whatsoever.

Thanks for all the input. I had forgotten about the Jornada's, I checked out staples and they have the 520 for 179 - coupon so it makes it around ~150. I suppose now I'm debating between the 520 and the Vx. I don't have alot of money to spend that's why I'm not opting for the m505 or later models.

I really like the features on the Jornada(still 256 colors I think), but I'm still debating because the slim form factor is highly desireable.

i've sold IIIc's and Vx. I went with the Vx due to the slim profile, and the greyscale. I can go about a month without recharging. Think you can go that long with a backlit color display? the IIIc is really thick, similar in profile and weight to my dads IIIx. I just didnt feel like lugging around something that heavy.

<< I can go about a month without recharging. Think you can go that long with a backlit color display? >>

That is a MAJOR misconception in regard to the IIIc! I have a IIIc and can vouch for its unbelieveable battery life. The battery lasts seemingly forever. I have not recharged mine since thanksgiving and it is at about 75%. (for those of you who can't do math, that is more than a month!). I should also note that I keep the screen at the HIGHEST brightness! I guarantee that no one will be disappointed with the battery life of a Palm IIIc.

i was actually asking a question, how long do you think you can go? i use mine pretty heavily, so depending on your level of use you will definetly see variable results.

i had just seen some information on the tv about the new models for 2002, they will incorporate highspeed wireless, and color . you may want to take a look at them.
the model they had was a handspring wireless mono. due out like a week into the new year.
good luck
