Palm Pre Rumor: $1000 Unlocked, $300 for existing customers, $200 for newbies.

Sprint lost yet another 1mil + customers last quarter. I'd bet money it's not totally a rumor. That unlock price will stop 99% of those who thought about buying it to use on another carrier. The only price I have a problem with is the $300 for existing subs, and if that's for subs who aren't due an upgrade, even that's not that bad.
 
Sprint is CDMA and iDEN, but they've been slowly migrating off of iDEN which they acquired from Nextel. The Pre will be CDMA and you could try to use it on Verizon.
 
Sprint and Palm have blown a golden oppertunity. They should have released this things last month. Now they have fiddle farted around and the new iPhone is going to dropping at almost the same time. People want the newest toy. They are now going to be competing with the marketing machine that is Apple and their extremely popular phone. I think this may be the final nail in the coffin. All that said, I look forward to gettting a Pre when my contract is up in August assuming they let SERO use it.
 
You could use the Pre on Cricket, and possibly MetroPCS. I worked with a guy who had a Sprint phone on Cricket. Technically it would work on Verizon, but unless they changed big time over the past few years they won't activate any phone that's not theirs period.

According to Wikipedia, the Palm will be GSM and CDMA (EVDO rev.A) compatible.

Verizon's open door policy or whatever is useless. CDMA handsets and models are so bland and such a small part of the global market it won't make a difference because your choices are crap anyway.

For the Pre, it's not clear, but there will be separate models. One model won't support both CDMA and GSM. I believe they mentioned that a GSM handset will be later on this year for international use.
 
I would take that with a big grain of salt. BB's price leaks are notoriously wrong.

For the first, it is true. A couple guys over at ppcgeeks have gotten Sprint Diamonds activated on Verizon. A crappy as the choices are, CDMA still has the best high speed data coverage in the US. Both Spint and Verizon have broader high speed data coverage than AT&T or T-Mobile. I am not arguing voice coverage, just data. Hopefully with LTE this whole CMDA/GSM mess will be over with.

For the latter, Palm said they were making the Pre in GSM later this year. Now they may have changed their tune but that was the original story.

Yeah. 600 seems like it would be the right price point. When the iPhone came out, look how much it was.
 
my nextel i860 hinge open thingy broke, just in time for the palm pre. does anyone know if i can call customer service on release day and upgrade through the phone?
 
I'd been a Palm fan for a number of years. When my Treo finally died and there was nothing new on the horizon (except the Foleo - so close, yet so wrong), I went to WinMob and have been happy with it for the most part.

But the Pre has my interest and, depending on early adapters, I may very likely return to the Palm family. It has one other thing going for it that I like: Wireless recharging.

It's not a deal maker/breaker. But it's an idea I like.
 
I don't know why anyone is even remotely surprised at the charger price. Given the price of ~$30 for some chargers at Verizon, something like this I'd figure $50-70.

But supposedly the base isn't all that heavy, so pulling straight up tends to pick up the base. A twist motion might help, but the person giving the first impression didn't really focus on the touchstone.

Regardless, $50 was my high end limit for the base. It would have been a cool toy, but even at $50, I'd be hesitant. We'll see if any 3rd parties make it out, and what exactly Palm meant by the "Touchstone product line."
