Palm Pixi Plus Verizon with no data plan?

If I bought my gf a Palm Pixi Plus could she use it with no data plan? I think if you buy a phone with a new contract you must have a data plan. I'm planning on buying this phone right out.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I know this is not what you're asking but does she have to be with Verizon or can she switch to PagePlus? This is what people who bought the Pixi Plus outright have been doing.

With Verizon you must have a data plan on any smartphone, no other way around it. It's just how it is.

Stopped by the Verizon store today and I got that same response. Even the sales guy thought it was stupid.

You can't use it wifi only, unactivated? I thought you could.... But that is what I thought I heard...

You can, but then it's not really a phone, it's more like an iPod Touch.

Unfortunately, you can't get out of the data plan even if you buy it outright. The only advantage you get from buying the phone without a subsidy is you're not locked into a contract, but that's not much help since Verizon is the only carrier that would work with that phone anyway.

Well actually, you could probably get it no-contract and activate it on Page Plus instead. Cheap and you get a small amount of data. Enough for light use.

As someone else said, activate it on Page Plus instead. I've set several friends up that way and all of them are VERY happy with the phone and service. $29.99/month total for 1200 minutes/2000 texts/100mb data (I think?).

Page plus would work BUT her parent's are currently paying for her voice plan with Verizon.

So basically you want to get the phone and have it be activated to her account without her parents having to pay extra because now they only pay for dumbphone plan?

I guess the question that presents itself (that Verizon is also asking) is:

What good is a semi-smart phone without a data plan? The whole point of of something like a Pixi is be able to check social networking sites and such on the go. Good chunks of the phone would seem "broken" by lack of a data plan, unless your girlfriend is willing to be religious about doing all the "fun" stuff on the phone only when she is at home on her parent's wifi (which is about as nerdy as having two phones).

She doesn't live with her parents. We live together.

She has WiFi at home and everywhere on campus and at work. When I was only making $15 an hour at my internship I dropped my data package with AT&T and just used my iPhone as a phone + wifi for data. Didn't have to deal with this crap.

When you own the phone why can't you choose what service you want? The fact that you can't is bullshit imho.

Buy a Kin 2m from Ebay. It's actually a great phone and the no data plan required was part of the original intention of the phone before Verizon killed the original Kin 2 by requiring a full data plan.

no dont get the kin two...i have one and its abslutely horrible. thats why im switching to the palm..it freezes and shut off almost hourly.it doesnt display when you get new calls or texts occasionally and it soemtimes completely locks down.. i know it not just my specific phone because ive had 2 of them and its happened to both. ive needed to do a factory reboot 3 times in the past month with this one and once youve done that you lose all contacts asnd there is no way to retrieve them becasue zune doesnt save them....its horrible you are much better off witht he palm
