Problem is, it's not true, and kids find out it's not true, and you lose credibitlity for the dangers that are real. Kids already are prone to thinking they're immune to harm.

I don't really want to get into the topic of designing the most effective sex ed message, but I'll say I think it needs to be pretty honest, including that "hey, sex feels great and you have really, really strong biological desires built in for it." And then give them lots of good reasons not to have it. That they can accept.

If passing condoms out to your kids makes them have sex instead of continuing the decision they already made, you have bigger problems with them.

I hear ya. Teach them everything you can (short of demonstrations and how-to videos), but as long as the theme is "you will die a horrible death if you have sex before 18" at the end, I am a happy father

I personally feel her daugther, whether intentional or not, has become a target. Hell, you got people on this board calling her a whore. I personally dont think the story was HIDDEN so much as probably released sooner than the campaign had planned. Either way, it should have been a non-issue, but it is all people are talking about.

You are only the parent what rights should you have? You know the school and the government are always right and knows whats best for your kid. Oh ya they don't.

You say "practice" as if teachers are going to be helping guys put on rubbers and then showing them how to have sex with female classmates. Do you REALLY think this is what is meant by "sex education?"

I think the best sort of sex education should teach the consequences of sexual behavior, both the negatives and the positives (yes, there really can be positive consequences to having sex, even for teenagers), should stress abstinence, but should also teach about contraception (which should include instruction on how to obtain and effectively use contraceptives).

Naturally, I think parents should determine what sort of sex education their own children will receive. If they want their kids to be taught abstinence-only, then the kids would attend only the classes where abstinence was discussed. Same for teaching the "positives" of sex.

I strongly believe that contraceptives should be made freely available - anonymously if possible - to every student who wants them. The notion that withholding contraception is going to stops teenagers from having sex is absurd; if they can't get condoms, kids will instead use much riskier methods, methods that will increase their odds both for getting pregnant and and contracting STDs.

You don't have the right to know and you don't have the right to prevent them from getting contraception. Preventing access to sexual education and contraception has NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD stopped any one from having sex.
Preventing access only serves to increase disease and unplanned pregnancy.

I feel sorry for Palin's daughter, it must feel awful become pregnant not during the time and in the place of your choosing.

Oh, hell no. The Obama campaign's only official response is likely to be an angry attack on the bloggers perpetuating this discussion.

It is the RNC that will take this molehill and use it as a club against Obama. They'll take two of their favorite tactics, innuendo and guilt by association, to suggest the Obama campaign is, in fact, behind the "scurrilous smears against this poor woman and her innocent family." They'll repeat it over and over until many Americans will start to believe it, or at least wonder if it's true, they'll start to sympathize with Palin, and soon they'll be chanting right along with the RNC about "what a bunch of assholes Obama and his supporters are to be attacking this poor mom, her young daughter, and her *gasp* handicapped little baby. You bastards! Leave this poor helpless woman alone." It will become one of the front page topics of the campaign season, burying legitimate issues that could hurt McCain.

Will it be a crock? Of course, what's your point. Look back at the all the other lies they've sold America over the last eight years -- Swiftboat Liars, Dan Rather, etc. -- then tell me they can't pull this one off.
